Summary: A sermon to adults on the Deliverance of King Hezekiah
Isaiah 38:1-8 10/26/25 a.m.
Next Sunday is a BIG DAY for all of us!!! Do you know why? Because we get an extra hour. That’s right, next Sunday will have 25 hours in it. That’s exciting. If we can do this often enough, we’ll never get old, right?
I heard this story and it may or may not be true but an Old Indian man was told about Daylight Savings Time. And this is what he said, “Only white man think he can cut off end of blanket and sew it on other end to make it longer.”
I think most of us wish they would just leave it all alone. Quit changing it back and forth. But, I guess the powers that be think it’s necessary. So don’t forget next Sunday to set your clocks back or you’ll get here awful early.
Looking into God’s Word we see twice where God performed a miracle with the SUN. In Joshua 10, the SUN STOOD STILL and in Isaiah 38, the SUN MOVED BACKWARDS 10 degrees. So let’s look Verses 1-8 of Isaiah 38.
“In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death. And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came unto him, and said unto him, Thus saith the Lord, Set thine house in order: for thou shalt die, and not live.
2 Then Hezekiah turned his face toward the wall, and prayed unto the Lord,
3 And said, Remember now, O Lord, I beseech thee, how I have walked before thee in truth and with a perfect heart, and have done that which is good in thy sight.
And Hezekiah wept sore.
4 Then came the word of the Lord to Isaiah, saying,
5 Go, and say to Hezekiah, Thus saith the Lord, the God of David thy father, I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears: behold, I will add unto thy days fifteen years.
6 And I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria: and I will defend this city.
7 And this shall be a sign unto thee from the Lord, that the Lord will do this thing that he hath spoken;
8 Behold, I will bring again the shadow of the degrees, which is gone down in the sun dial of Ahaz, ten degrees backward. So the sun returned ten degrees, by which degrees it was gone down.”
Now that would be a strange sight to behold would it not? The sun coming up in the West. It went down and then started going back up. I’m not the best at math but the sun moves 15 degrees every hour so that would be about 40 minutes extra time added to that day. That’s REAL TIME not just some little trick where you take off time in the SPRING and add it back on in the FALL.
No, GOD ADDED to Hezekiah’s LIFE and to PROVE IT, He added to the DAY.
This morning I want to look at what God’s message was to Hezekiah found there in Verse 5. #1 I have heard thy prayer, #2 I have seen thy tears: behold, #3 I will add unto thy days fifteen years.
But before we get into this message let’s go to the Lord in Prayer. Brother ____, would you lead us?
I’ve always loved this story. Hezekiah, a man who lived a Godly life. A King who did some GREAT THINGS.
He destroyed the idols and high places.
He cleansed and reopened the temple.
He reinstated the Passover.
He also did some wonderful things for the city of Jerusalem
He dammed up the Gihon spring's upper outlet and dug a tunnel to bring the water to the west side of the city.
He built storehouses for grain, wine, oil, and livestock.
And he re-established the Levites. He restored the duties of the Levitical priesthood. You see, they had stopped performing the SACRIFICES unto the Lord. I want us to look at 2 Chronicles 31:1-3, “Now when all this was finished, all Israel that were present went out to the cities of Judah, and brake the images in pieces, and cut down the groves, and threw down the high places and the altars out of all Judah and Benjamin, in Ephraim also and Manasseh, until they had utterly destroyed them all. Then all the children of Israel returned, every man to his possession, into their own cities.
2 And Hezekiah appointed the courses of the priests and the Levites after their courses, every man according to his service, the priests and Levites for burnt offerings and for peace offerings, to minister, and to give thanks, and to praise in the gates of the tents of the Lord.
3 He appointed also the king's portion of his substance for the burnt offerings, to wit, for the morning and evening burnt offerings, and the burnt offerings for the sabbaths, and for the new moons, and for the set feasts, as it is written in the law of the Lord.”
