God's Judgment (Psalm 17)

Many claim a clear conscience, that they have lived right, but who will make the right judgment about us all? Let’s look at Psalm 17.

Do we need to pray for God’s judgment in our own just cause?

Hear a just cause, Lord, give Your attention to my cry; Listen to my prayer, which is not from deceitful lips. Let my judgment come forth from Your presence; Let Your eyes look with integrity. (Ps 17:1-2 NASB)

Do we live lives of integrity, avoiding bribes and violence, keeping to God’s paths?

Though you probe my heart, though you examine me at night and test me, you will find that I have planned no evil; my mouth has not transgressed. Though people tried to bribe me, I have kept myself from the ways of the violent through what your lips have commanded. My steps have held to your paths; my feet have not stumbled. (Ps 17:3-5 NIV)

Does God hear the prayers of those who trust in Him?

I have called upon You, for You will hear me, O God; Incline Your ear to me, and hear my speech. Show Your marvelous lovingkindness by Your right hand, O You who save those who trust in You From those who rise up against them. Keep me as the apple of Your eye; Hide me under the shadow of Your wings, From the wicked who oppress me, From my deadly enemies who surround me. (Ps 17:6-9 NKJV)

Could a clear conscience hide secret or unknown sins? Whose evaluation really counts?

As for me, it matters very little how I might be evaluated by you or by any human authority. I don’t even trust my own judgment on this point. My conscience is clear, but that doesn’t prove I’m right. It is the Lord himself who will examine me and decide. So don’t make judgments about anyone ahead of time—before the Lord returns. For he will bring our darkest secrets to light and will reveal our private motives. Then God will give to each one whatever praise is due. (1 Cor 4:3-5 NLT)
