Summary: Do we let the world distract us from what's really important?

Do we let the world distract us, leading us away from God, or are our hearts fixed on God’s eternal inheritance? Let’s look at Psalm 16.

When governments, the law, and even our own church cannot protect us, who can? Who really gave us every good thing?

Protect me, Lord God! I run to you for safety, and I have said, “Only you are my Lord! Every good thing I have is a gift from you.” (Ps 16:1-2 CEV)

Who are the truly excellent ones of the land? What do the gods of this world give?

As for the saints in the land, they are the excellent ones, in whom is all my delight. The sorrows of those who run after another god shall multiply; their drink offerings of blood I will not pour out or take their names on my lips. (Ps 16:3-4 ESV)

Do we have a pleasant and beautiful inheritance from God?

Lord, You are my portion and my cup of blessing; You hold my future. The boundary lines have fallen for me in pleasant places; indeed, I have a beautiful inheritance. (Ps 16:5-6 HCSB)

Who do we bless, who do we set before us continually, God or the world and its fake promises?

I will bless the Lord who has counseled me; indeed, my conscience instructs me during the night. I have set the Lord before me continuously; because he stands at my right hand, I will stand firm. (Ps 16:7-8 ISV)

Who makes our hearts truly glad, the world or God?

Therefore my heart is glad, and my glory rejoiceth: my flesh also shall rest in hope. For thou wilt not leave my soul in hell [sheol, the grave]; neither wilt thou suffer thine Holy One to see corruption. (Ps 16:9-10 KJV)

Do we love or fear anything in this world or do we trust God?

Make sure that your way of life is free from the love of money, being content with what you have; for He Himself has said, “I will never desert you, nor will I ever forsake you,” so that we confidently say, “The Lord is my helper, I will not be afraid. What will man do to me?” (Heb 13:5–6 LSB)

Do we let the world distract us, leading us away from God, or are our hearts fixed on God’s eternal inheritance? You decide!
