Summary: The Law could not bring peace to the believer

Carnal pleasures, worldly lust and evil doings, are the works of the flesh, which is what unregenerate people do. The favor of God, the welfare of the soul, and the concerns of eternity, are things of the Spirit, which those that walk after the Spirit do.

The man is as the mind does. The mind is the forge of thoughts, and as a man thinks in his heart, so is he. Which way do our thoughts move with most pleasure? On what does the mind dwell with most satisfaction? The mind is the seat of wisdom, so what are we most mindful of, the things of the flesh or the things of the Spirit?

As believers we have a choice, we either mind the things of the flesh or the things of the Spirit. If we mind the things of the flesh we are carnal-mindedness which brings spiritual death.

It is the death of the soul; for it alienates us from God. A carnal soul is a dead soul, and carnal souls are miserable souls.

If we are carnally minded we mind the thing of the flesh and cannot please God. There is the holiness of the Law of God, and the wickedness of the carnal mind, and they are as different as light and darkness.

John said, “Ye are a chosen generation a royal priesthood, and that we should show forth the praises of Him who has called us out of darkness and into to His marvelous light.”

Let us see whether we are living in the Spirit of Christ. We all have flesh and spirit in us, but to live the flesh and try to be Spiritual want work. We will be overcome and subdued by one or the other. If we live in the Spirit we will not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

So the great question is whether we are in the flesh or in the Spirit; and how may we come to know it? By enquiring who rules, who keeps house, who has dominion and who is most welcome.

"If any man has not the Sprit of Christ, he is none of His." To be in Christ we are one of his children, his servant, and his friend and in union with him. If we belong to him and live in the Spirit we will be like Him in meekness, humility, longsuffering and patient, and charitable.

We cannot walk in His steps unless we have his spirit, and His life framed in our souls. We must be guided by the Holy Spirit of God, who is the sanctifier, teacher, and comforter. To be free from condemnation we must be led by the Spirit, and that is what the law could not do.
