Come, Let’s Go Up to the Mountain

Micah 4:1-2

 Everyone who professes to know Christ should be driven by desire into His presence.

 As the bride of Christ, it is our privilege to get to know Christ in a real, intimate way.

 We must daily spend time in His presence, and make the choices that show our love and devotion for Him.

1. Come, Let’s Go Up to the Mountain

a. Exodus 19:10-13 – God calls His people to the mountain to meet with Him.

b. Exodus 19:17,20 – the Israelites stood at the foot of the mountain and only Moses went up into His presence.

c. God’s desire was to speak to the entire camp, yet it was only Moses who went to the top of the mountain to meet with Him.

d. Israel was content to hear from Moses and not to hear directly from God (Deuteronomy 5:27).

e. The children of Israel were saying that they valued their lives more than they valued God’s presence.

f. God is looking for people willing to come into His presence in spite of any potential risks – even the risk of death.

g. Moses went to where God was (Exodus 20:21) – the place where God is always waiting for someone to come into His presence.

h. There are many believers today who still take the same approach. They choose to cower away from God or look for someone else to hear from God for them.

i. The children of Israel had the same opportunity to spend time in God’s presence as Moses did, yet they chose to turn that opportunity down.

2. God Will Teach Us His Ways

a. Psalm 103:7 – Israel knew His acts, Moses knew His ways.

b. Moses drew near to God and learned His ways – the nature of Who He is.

c. Israel drew back and only knew of God’s acts – the things He does.

d. When you know someone’s ways, you know how they operate. When you know someone by their acts, you only know what you expect from them.

e. If you only get to see the acts of God and never take the opportunity to learn of His ways, you are in danger of falling into idolatry.

f. The acts of God rather than God Himself can become your focus of worship.

g. How many people every Sunday worship God based on what He is doing?

h. While Moses was on the mountain in the presence of God, the children of Israel worshipped a gold calf. Why? God’s acts were not on display.

i. Our worship is not to be about what God is or isn’t doing. We worship Him for Who He is.

j. Man was not created simply as an instrument through which God could display His acts. Man was created as someone with whom God could have intimate relationship. God desires to walk with us in the cool of the day as He did with Adam.

k. It hurts the heart of God for people to only seek Him for what He is doing.

l. Jesus called those who look for the acts an evil and adulterous generation (Matthew 12:39).

m. How many people want the parts of God that appeal to them?

n. There are far too many within the church that have a “What have you done for me lately?” approach with God.

o. God wants us to know His ways, His nature, His character.
