When it comes to being disciples we can fall into the trap of thinking that we have to be an upfront person otherwise we cannot be effective witnesses. The example of Andrew demonstrates that such is not the case.

2. Nathanael – Great Things Are Found In The Strangest Places

Nathanael, who is also known as Bartholomew, is confronted by a Saviour who seems to know so much – yet Nathanael is still allowed to be a disciple. We can also be disciples, despite the fact that we are known so well by Jesus.

3. James Son Of Alphaeus – Named But Unknown.

James the son of Alphaeus is basically an unknown disciple, yet he is still an important member of the twelve apostles. When we are in Christ we also are disciples and many of us will be totally unknown, but we are just as important.

4. James Son Of Zebedee - Authority In Action

When it comes to discipleship we have an overestimation of ourselves and our contribution to the kingdom. Jesus’ discussion with James reminds us that our place in the family of God, even when we make great contributions, is still only a gift of grace.

5. John Son Of Zebedee:- Thundering Character Gives Way To Loving Disciple.

When John begins his journey as a disciple he has a thunderous character which is very intolerant. Yet, because Jesus sees all disciples as “a work in progress” we can have the hope and assurance that we also can be disciples for Jesus.

6. Judas … The Fallen Disciple

Judas was given all the privileges of being a disciple, yet he still did not understand the need to totally submit to Jesus. As modern disciples we need to be sure that our heart has been captured by the Lord.

7. Matthew – A Transformed Tax Collector

By calling Matthew as one of His disciples Jesus demonstrates His great love for sinners and His willingness to meet them where they are at – not where they should be. As disciples of Jesus was are called to have the same attitude.

We know more about the life of Peter than any other disciple which means we can trace his growth as a disciple. In a three section sermon we will see how Jesus helps His impulsive disciple to persevere, even when they fail.

When it comes to sharing the Gospel we don’t need to have all the answers. We just need to be willing to invite not-yet-believers to “Come and See”.

Sometimes we might find ourselves wondering why Jesus picked us as His disciples. When we look at Simon the Zealot we see that Jesus does not choose us according to what we can give, He chooses us because of His incredible grace.

While there are times when Jesus became a little frustrated by the questions the disciples asked, He never got to a point where He told the disciples to stop asking questions because having questions is part of our growth as disciples.
