This Psalm was written by David but we are not told when he wrote it. It could have been composed during the period of Absalom’s rebellion when David was old, sick, and unable to handle all the complex responsibilities of the kingdom.

This Psalm is basically a plea for divine vindication with regard to the oppressor’s allegations and actions. David’s confidence in the divine judge is the backbone of Psalm 7. Abraham was also one who had the utmost confidence in God bringing judgment.

David was often in danger, whether in the court of Saul (1 Sam. 9:1), in the wilderness being chased by Saul (1 Sam. 18:11; 19:10), or during the rebellion of Absalom.

The opening words suggest that this psalm is an appeal for help during bad times when evil men dominate. There are times when sin seems rampant, sweeping all before it like a tidal wave.

The theme of this psalm isT “mercy’s vast unfathomable sea.” God’s love is deeper, far deeper than that. The psalmist looks first at God’s goodness manifested in His “mercy.” The word for mercy is the usual word for grace or lovingkindness. That “mercy endures forever.”
