1. Salutation

To Paul, the gospel was a miracle he had experienced. The gospel is “the power of God to salvation,” and it brings freedom. Christ died “that He might deliver us.” When Paul trusted Christ, the shackles of sin and legalistic religion were broken!

2. Denunciation

The Judaizers, who were a legalistic Jewish party, tried to combine Christ’s message of salvation within the context of the Mosaic Law. Immature Christians believed their distorted teachings, which demanded more than justification by faith alone.

The message for his readers is that the Gospel he preaches was given to him by Jesus Christ; there is not a spark of human creativity in it, or the slightest touch of human cunning. It is not of, by, or from man. It is not according to man. . .

4. Demonstrated By Paul’s Conversion (Series: Lessons On Galatians)

Paul was well known even before his conversion; but it was not for any good thing he had done. He was known to be zealous for the Jewish faith, for which he persecuted Christians, but a meeting with Jesus changed his life.

The church at Jerusalem did not immediately admit Paul to their fellowship, because they were afraid of him and thought he was not a disciple, until Barnabas took him to Peter and James, and related his conversion and his boldness in preaching the Gospel

The Galatians were following the false teachers who were Judaizers, because they thought it was necessary for those who aspired to higher perfection to observe the Law of Moses in addition to Christian faith and doctrine.

It looks as if they may have chastised the apostle for being a persecutor of the church before his conversion, when nothing of that nature could be said of the Twelve and therefore he was not to be considered on a level with them.

8. Peter’s Hypocrisy

When Paul visited Jerusalem, Peter (and others) gave him the “right hand of fellowship”; but when Peter visited Antioch, Paul “opposed him to his face.” Peter’s conduct in Antioch produced a tense face-to-face confrontation between two Christian leaders.

“How should man be just with God?” was a very important question, because the answer had eternal consequences. “The just shall live by His faith” is God’s answer; and it was this truth that has liberated so many from religious bondage and fear.

Someone will say, “But when we are saved, then surely we can keep the Law.” Absolutely not! Because it calls for CONTINUED, UNBROKEN, PERFECT obedience in every single point. One slip and you are guilty.

We never judge the Scriptures by our experiences; we test our experiences by the Word of God.

Only perfect performance could win divine approval under the Law, but since that was not achievable the Law could only condemn a person (James 2.10) and cause him to cast himself on God in faith.

Jesus, being made a curse for us means that by bearing God’s wrath for sinners on the cross, Christ took upon Himself the curse pronounced on those who violated the Law.

Paul had gone to great lengths as he tried to show these Galatians the foolishness of being swayed by these false teachers, who asserted that while we are saved by grace, we are still obligated to keep the Law of God perfectly or we would lose our salvation.

In addition to the fact that turning to the Law ruins grace, there is the additional problem that it creates an entirely new obligation: a person is obligated to keep the whole Law.

If you have been saved by trusting Christ, and then you go down to the low level of living by the Law, you have fallen from grace. This is what “falling from grace” actually means.

Paul uses the example of the athlete because it was something his readers were familiar with, and the idea he wants to convey to them here is that they began the Christian life with dedication and enthusiasm.

The apostle was accused by the false teachers of teaching circumcision in some places, and they said they were teaching no more than he taught. Or it may have been inferred from the fact (which was undoubtedly true) that Paul in general complied with the customs of the Jews when he was with them.
