Titus is one of three epistles of Paul referred to as pastoral epistles. While these were written to young pastors that Paul desired to equip for ministry, there is much wisdom that is applicable for every believer. Paul begins this epistle with an effort to encourage and equip Titus for ministry.
Equipped to Serve Titus 1: 1-4 Our text today comes from one of the Pastoral Epistles. Titus was a young preacher and faithful helper of Paul. 2. Elders In The Church

Along with the instruction Paul gave in his letter to Timothy, he also shared with Titus concerning the qualifications for elders, bishops, or pastors within the church. This passage was given for the benefit of the church in selecting and ordaining elders to serve in the local church.

Immediately following his instruction for ordaining elders in each city, Paul revealed the great need to have elders in place within the churches - false doctrine, immorality, and idolatry. It was imperative the church be able to deal with the many challenges she faced.

Having warned of false teaching, Paul revealed the great benefit and result of sound, biblical teaching - it would serve to build and sustain Christian character within the body of Christ.

5. The Message Of The Church

Having shared much in regard to establishing a firm foundation for the church, Paul emphasized the priority of the church - sharing the Gospel, above all else. Grace brings salvation, and then enables us to live for Christ. Transformed lives are the goal of the church.

The letter to Titus, although written to the young pastor, has much to say to the church and individual believers. Following our transformation in Christ, we have an obligation to live in a way that pleases Him and reveals His grace before others.

Paul left some final instructions for Titus regarding the church and his commitment to them and the Gospel. We need to embrace and practice these principles in our day in order to maintain doctrinal purity and bear an effective Christian witness.
