Why would Jesus seemingly praise the Pharisees saying our righteousness should exceed theirs? Why would I need to compare my righteousness to that of men that Jesus despised?

What is it about the "Lord's Prayer" and other comments from the Sermon on the Mount" that can help us pray a deeper prayer than what we've prayed before?
