John opens his first letter with an honest proclamation of what God has given us: The Life appeared, we have seen it and testify to it, and because of that we proclaim to you eternal life is available to all which gives us tremendous joy!

“Whoever says, “I know him,” but does not do what he commands is a liar … AND the truth is not in that person.” John's words cause a POWERFUL examination in our lives that if we are truly followers of Christ, we MUST obey what He commands.

The world’s values do not last for eternity, they are self-centered and empty. John’s cry to the believer here is asking, “Who do you live for?” Will we love and live for God or ourselves?

4. Anti-Christs Among Us

We already have the teachings of truth; they’re placed in our hearts from God. Our battle is with religion that seeks to control through doubt/fear/lies; this is what we must teach against through love and the truth of God.

5. Be Encouraged; Live For God

John concludes his first letter with wisdom and affirmation that each of us can use today. We must keep ourselves from the things that are ungodly (idols), yet live purposefully showing Christ to all we encounter.

A poor commitment to holiness stems from one thing: We do not fully comprehend all that we have become in Christ when we are His. Will we fully submit to Jesus as Lord in every part of our lives?

If we live for God, we strive for righteous things that are His; but if we live for the devil, we strive for unholy things that are his. Our choice is simple, we must choose to live for God!

The testimony of God for us is simple: 1) He has given us eternal life; 2) this life is in his Son. As we live, we must be willing to always remember this and share it with others as often as we can.

9. What Is Love?

Our command therefore for living rightly is simple: believe in Jesus Christ and love one another as He has commanded. It’s in the fruit of our lives where we see whether or not this is being lived out.

10. No Fear In Love

We love because God first loved us, especially when we were completely unlovable. We must remember it is God who made our relationship with Him possible, and Christians should approach Him with confidence knowing His love for us is without end.

God has given us His Spirit to dwell within us forever, to show us what love is, and the Spirit loves those who are unlovable ... we just respond to His calling. So, how much energy do we waste holding onto anger and malice?

The ministry of the Holy Spirit allows us to hear from God; to discern His voice. Therefore, prayer, meditation, and knowing the voice of Him is critical! Do we know His truth over the noise of everything else competing for our attention?
