The world’s values do not last for eternity, they are self-centered and empty. John’s cry to the believer here is asking, “Who do you live for?” Will we love and live for God or ourselves?

We already have the teachings of truth; they’re placed in our hearts from God. Our battle is with religion that seeks to control through doubt/fear/lies; this is what we must teach against through love and the truth of God.

5. Be Encouraged; Live For God

John concludes his first letter with wisdom and affirmation that each of us can use today. We must keep ourselves from the things that are ungodly (idols), yet live purposefully showing Christ to all we encounter.

A poor commitment to holiness stems from one thing: We do not fully comprehend all that we have become in Christ when we are His. Will we fully submit to Jesus as Lord in every part of our lives?

The testimony of God for us is simple: 1) He has given us eternal life; 2) this life is in his Son. As we live, we must be willing to always remember this and share it with others as often as we can.

9. What Is Love?

Our command therefore for living rightly is simple: believe in Jesus Christ and love one another as He has commanded. It’s in the fruit of our lives where we see whether or not this is being lived out.

We love because God first loved us, especially when we were completely unlovable. We must remember it is God who made our relationship with Him possible, and Christians should approach Him with confidence knowing His love for us is without end.

God has given us His Spirit to dwell within us forever, to show us what love is, and the Spirit loves those who are unlovable ... we just respond to His calling. So, how much energy do we waste holding onto anger and malice?
