We need to be guided by God’s Word: Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my feet, And a light to my path.” I remember learning that verse in VBS as a kid. So, can I just hold my Bible up at night to walk through a dark house? No way.

This is just a book. It is ink on pages and cover, just like every other book. It is NOT some kind of magic charm to keep on a shelf at home that will protect you and your home. It has no power if it is just another neglected book in your home, like all those cookbooks you have tucked away in a drawer or cabinet. But if it is opened, read, studied, and memorized, then amazing things begin to happen. John Wesley referred to the study of Scripture as an Ordinary Means of Grace, meaning it can be done repeatedly. Each time, God pours out His amazing grace on you. Also, the Holy Spirit makes the words come alive on the page. No matter how many times you have read a passage, the next time can be the one that God uses to touch you deep within.
