[302]. A MESSAGE FROM A POEM - THEY ALL FORSOOK HIM AND FLED
Did the disciples really forsake the Lord, or was it a natural, human action of fear? The Gospels are clear on this. Their peace and happiness of three years was shattered when their Lord was taken by the vile religious leaders to be put on trial – a false, unjust trial.
Two verses mention this fleeing. {{Matthew 26:56 “but all this has taken place that the Scriptures of the prophets may be fulfilled.” Then all the disciples LEFT HIM AND FLED.”}}. And {{Mark 14:49-50 “Every day I was with you in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me, but this has happened that the Scriptures might be fulfilled, and THEY ALL LEFT HIM AND FLED.”}}
There is little doubt that this fleeing was because of the fear of man and confusion and uncertainty. How would we react in such extreme situations as that one was? I don’t think it would have been any different. Our human natures are weak in unexpected trauma.
This was not unexpected though, but the disciples had very clouded vision and did not understand. Look at these words here –
{{Mark 14:26-29 After singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives and Jesus said to them, “YOU WILL ALL FALL AWAY BECAUSE IT IS WRITTEN, ‘I WILL STRIKE DOWN THE SHEPHERD AND THE SHEEP SHALL BE SCATTERED,’ but after I have been raised, I will go before you to Galilee.” Peter said to Him, “Even though all may fall away, yet I will not.”}}
Well we know what happened to Peter but the Old Testament verse, Zechariah 13:7, was being fulfilled. The word “scattered” connotes a pushing out, a pushing away from, caused by external forces, but at the same time fear impelled the disciples to run away.
The Lord did not leave it that way but gathered His own up again after the resurrection. It is similar to a small flock of sheep that one night was visited by wild dogs and they all ran in all directions – were scattered – but in the morning the farmer/shepherd goes and gathers them up again. Thus the Resurrection was the gathering.
===========================================================
THEY ALL FORSOOK HIM AND FLED
O Lord, You were deserted
By those You loved so much;
Denied by those you nurtured
Who knew Your loving touch.
================
Through fear they all were scattered,
In that foreboding night.
Their fleshly strength was battered,
And fearful, took their flight.
================
Alone, the Lord rejected,
Assailed by Satan’s own,
To horrors was subjected,
That rulers did condone.
================
His own had fled in terror
To leave Him all alone,
But peace in man’s dread clamour,
Was His from heaven’s throne.
================
The scattered ones He gathered
Unto Himself again.
Their hopes that once were shattered,
Revived, then did not wane.
================
Do we at times forsake Him
As they did there that night?
Or courage show, when it’s grim,
And follow Him aright?
