In his book Take the Stairs, Roy Vaden tells of visiting Jamaica and complaining to the cab driver about the rain. The cab driver smiled and responded, “In Jamaica, man, we don’t have rain; we only have liquid sunshine.” As they drove through town, Vaden commented on how annoying all the speed bumps were. Again, the cab driver smiled and said, “In Jamaica, man, we don’t have speed bumps, we only have sleeping police, man.” He went on to explain how several children had been killed by reckless drivers and the solution was the installation of numerous speed bumps which the locals referred to as sleeping policemen. Rain to Vaden, was liquid sunshine to the cabdriver. And what was an annoying speed bump to Vaden, was a lifesaving device to the cabdriver. It is all about how you choose to see things.
