I have found expositional preaching to be the absolute best method of preaching for the pastorate. You always know what text you will be in... You always know what subject you will be preaching on... And you will never find yourself riding your favorite hobby horse. However, for the evangelist or the preacher who fills different pulpits as supply, topical preaching has its merits. It's difficult to mine the rich depths of a particular passage of Scripture if you are only preaching one sermon in a given place.
