About Matt
  • Education: Bachelor of Theology Degree
  • Experience: I have served in full-time pastoral ministry for the past 27 years serving churches in Michigan, Kansas and Indiana. I have been in my current pastoral position since 2005.
  • Comment to those looking at my sermons: I am just a pastor, and that is all I ever want to be in my life. I try my best to "preach the word and be instant in season and out of season."
  • Sermon or series that made a difference: The School of Christ Sermons and Teaching by the late Rev. B.H. Clendennen made a profound difference and impacted my life and ministry.
  • One of my favorite illustrations: Personal Illustration: "I met a missionary who had lived and studied in Israel and had become quite familiar with the Hebrew language and traditions. He brought out another perspective to this verse, Love your neighbor as yourself. In English the word “as” lets us know that something is being compared to another. We assume that the comparison is all about how we love ourselves and how we love our neighbor. However, this Hebrew scholar argued that the comparison was really between ourselves and our neighbor. So the idea would be, “Love your neighbor who is like yourself.”
  • Family: I am happily married for 25 years to my beautiful wife Stephanie. We are blessed with two children. My daughter Madison Herron and son-in-law Jarek Herron and my son Brice.
  • What my parents think of my sermons: They think I am a great preacher and some of my sermons last them a whole year.
  • What my spouse (really) thinks of my sermons: I preach the word but sometimes preach too long.
  • Best advice given to me about preaching: "You have not begun to pray until you've prayed." and "Remember that Pastoral ministry is defined in one phrase: LOVING PEOPLE."
  • Books that have had an impact: Fresh Wind, Fresh Fire by Pastor Jim Cymbala, all books by Watchman Nee, Why Revival Tarries by Leonard Ravenhill.
  • Hobbies: I workout 4-5 days a week. I am a fan of all St. Louis sports teams (Cardinals, Blues, St. Louis City SC, St. Louis Battle Hawks (XFL). I also enjoy doing home improvement projects around my home.
  • If I could Preach one more time, I would say...: Repent for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.
  • Something funny that happened while preaching: I remember preaching a Sunday evening sermon and right in the middle of the message, the tornado siren rang and my next phrase was "church dismissed and let's head for cover."
  • What I want on my tombstone: He loved God and He loved people

Christian believers can have HOPE even in a HOPELESS World.

INTRODUCTION: Quote: “We can live forty days without food, eight days without water, four minutes without air, but only a few seconds without hope”....How do we understand and therefore respond to the kind of world we are living in today? It is important to really focus on the question that Jesus was asked. "Which is the great commandment in the law?" Jesus said, “Love God. Love your neighbor.” He then states that all the law hangs on these two commandments.

Matthew 22:34-40-“But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?” 37 Jesus said to him, “‘You shall love the LORD your God ...read more
