Introduction

Good morning, friends and family! Today, we gather together to explore the wonderful world of children. We'll be diving into Psalms 127:3-5.

It was Dr. John Trainer who once wrote, "Children are not a distraction from more important work. They are the most important work." With these words in mind, let's read our Scripture passage for today:

"Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them! He shall not be put to shame when he speaks with his enemies in the gate." (Psalms 127:3-5)

Before we dive into today's message, let's take a moment to pray and invite the Holy Spirit to guide our understanding and application of this important passage.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of children and the reminder that they are indeed a heritage from You. As we study Your Word today, we ask that You open our hearts and minds to comprehend the depth of Your love for children and the ways You are involved in their lives. Help us to see the power of youth in action and the blessings they bring to our lives and our world. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

God's Involvement in the Lives of Children

As we delve into today's sermon, we must first recognize the foundational truth that children are a heritage from the Lord. This statement, found in verse 3, establishes the idea that children are not merely a product of biology or a result of human effort, but rather a gift from God Himself. God is intimately involved in the lives of children from the very beginning.

One of the ways we see God's involvement in the lives of children is through His divine design and creation. In the book of Genesis, we read that God created human beings in His own image, male and female He created them (Genesis 1:27). This means that every child, from the moment of conception, bears the image of God and is a unique reflection of His creativity and love.

Throughout Scripture, we see numerous examples of God's hand at work in the lives of young people, shaping their destinies and using them to accomplish His purposes. Consider the story of Joseph, who was sold into slavery by his brothers but later became a powerful ruler in Egypt, saving his family and many others from famine (Genesis 37-50). Or think of the young shepherd boy David, who was chosen by God to become the king of Israel and the ancestor of the Messiah (1 Samuel 16). In each of these stories, we see God's sovereign hand at work, guiding and directing the lives of children for His glory and their ultimate good.

Jesus Himself, during His earthly ministry, showed great compassion and care for children, welcoming them into His presence and blessing them (Mark 10:13-16). He also taught that anyone who causes harm to a child would face severe consequences, stating that "it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened around his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea" (Matthew 18:6). These words serve as a sobering reminder of the high value God places on the lives of children and His commitment to their protection and well-being.

The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is active in the lives of believers, guiding, convicting, and empowering them to live in accordance with God's will (John 14:26; 16:7-15). This includes children, who can also experience the presence and work of the Holy Spirit in their lives.

In the book of Acts, the apostle Peter declares that the promise of the Holy Spirit is not only for adults but also for their children, stating, "For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself" (Acts 2:39). This truth underscores the reality that God is actively involved in the lives of children, working in their hearts and minds to draw them closer to Himself.

It is essential that we, as parents, grandparents, and members of the church, recognize our responsibility to nurture and support the spiritual growth of the children in our care. This includes teaching them the truths of Scripture, praying for them, and modeling a life of faith and obedience to God. As the apostle Paul writes in Ephesians 6:4, "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger, but bring them up in the discipline and instruction of the Lord." By doing so, we partner with God in His work in the lives of children, helping them to grow in their understanding of His love, grace, and truth.

Throughout their lives, God's providential care and guidance are at work, shaping their destinies and using them to accomplish His purposes. His love, protection, and concern for their well-being are evident in the teachings of Jesus and the work of the Holy Spirit.
