BIG IDEA: Yom Kippur pointed to Christ: YESHUA/JESUS is both the perfect High Priest and the perfect Sacrifice. Through His once-for-all atonement, the veil is torn, sin is forgiven, and believers now have direct access to God, freedom to worship, and hope of eternal redemption.
Yom Kippur fulfilled in Jesus Christ.
The Old Covenant: Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur, High Priest, animal sacrifice, veil).
The New Covenant: Jesus as Sacrifice and High Priest.
The Result: Access to God, Invitation to Worship, Hope in Christ’s Sacrifice.
Yom Kippur (The Day of Atonement) was the most solemn day on Israel’s calendar. On this day the High Priest entered the Most Holy Place with the blood of sacrifice to atone for the sins of the people (Leviticus 16). The veil separated sinful man from the holy presence of God.
But in Christ, the once-for-all sacrifice has been made. Jesus is both the High Priest and the Lamb. The veil has been torn, and we now have direct access to the throne of grace.
THE OLD COVENANT FORESHADOWED (Veil and Sacrifice)
• Exodus 26:31-33 the veil separated the Holy Place from the Most Holy.
• Isaiah 52:3 We were sold for nothing, but redeemed without money.
• Jeremiah 31:31-33 God promises a New Covenant written on hearts.
• Numbers 11:29 Moses longed for God’s Spirit on all His people.
JESUS, OUR HIGH PRIEST AND SACRIFICE
• Hebrews 7:24-27 Jesus is the eternal High Priest, offering Himself once for all.
• Hebrews 8:1-6 Christ is the Mediator of a better covenant.
• Hebrews 9:11-12, 26-28 Christ entered the Most Holy Place with His own blood, once for all, to obtain eternal redemption.
• Matthew 27:50-51; Mark 15:38; Luke 23:45 The veil was torn in two, symbolizing direct access to God.
• Hebrews 10:19-20 We enter the Holiest by the blood of Jesus, through the veil of His flesh.
• Isaiah 53:5 By His stripes we are healed.
THE RESULT: DIRECT ACCESS TO GOD
Because Jesus fulfilled Yom Kippur, believers now approach God with confidence:
• Hebrews 4:16 Come boldly to the throne of grace.
• James 4:8 Draw near to God and He will draw near to you.
• Romans 5:1-2 Justified by faith, we have peace with God and access into His grace.
• 1 Timothy 2:5 One Mediator between God and men, Christ Jesus.
• Ephesians 2:13 Brought near by the blood of Christ.
CLEANSING AND FORGIVENESS
Repentance and forgiveness were central to Yom Kippur. In Christ, it is complete:
• 1 John 1:9 If we confess our sins, He forgives and cleanses.
• Acts 3:19 Repent and be converted, that sins may be blotted out.
• Psalm 51:10 Create in me a clean heart, O God.
• Isaiah 55:7 God abundantly pardons.
• Proverbs 28:13 He who confesses and forsakes sin finds mercy.
INVITATION TO WORSHIP
The Day of Atonement ended with Israel reconciled to God. In Christ, reconciliation is permanent, and worship flows freely:
• Psalm 100:4 Enter His gates with thanksgiving.
• John 4:24 Worship in spirit and truth.
• Colossians 3:16 Sing psalms and hymns with grace in your hearts.
• Hebrews 13:15 Offer the sacrifice of praise, the fruit of our lips.
• Psalm 150:6 Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!
HOPE IN CHRIST’S SACRIFICE
The temporary atonement of Yom Kippur is replaced with eternal hope in Christ:
• 2 Corinthians 5:17 In Christ, we are a new creation.
• Romans 8:1 No condemnation to those in Christ.
• John 3:16 God gave His Son for everlasting life.
• 1 Peter 1:3 We are born again to a living hope through Christ’s resurrection.
• Revelation 21:4 God will wipe away every tear; no more death, sorrow, or pain.
CONCLUSION:
THE FINISHED WORK OF MESSIAH
Yom Kippur pointed to the greater reality fulfilled in Jesus Christ. He is the perfect High Priest and the perfect sacrifice. The veil has been torn, sin atoned for, and access to God opened forever. Now, instead of a yearly covering, we have eternal redemption and the invitation to draw near, worship, and live in hope.
Be Blessed and Be a Blessing,
Bill
