WISE WOMAN
(Proverbs 31:10-31)
We may have lots of knowledge, great wealth, good looks and tons of experience,
but if we do not have wisdom, they?re all useless. Wisdom cannot be bought, because
wisdom is God?s gift. King Solomon was right, when he first became king, he didn?t ask
for wealth. He asked for wisdom. That?s why it?s not surprising when two young mothers
were fighting over a baby, Solomon could solve the problem easily.
Patience, just, fair, acceptable by others, obedient to God?s word are aspects of
wisdom. Now we try to look at Wisdom through a woman?s perspective. There are no
special reasons to do this, not only on Mother?s Day that we do this.
The second week of May is the time of Mother?s Day. Why do we celebrate
Mother?s Day? Many people misunderstand Christianity; they think we do not teach kids
to respect their parents. That is actually against the Bible. The Ten Commandments
teaches us to obey our parents, the 5th commandment says: “"Honor your father and your
mother, as the LORD your God commanded you, so that your days may be long and that
it may go well with you in the land that the LORD your God is giving you." This is the
evidence that we do teach people to respect their parents.
Indeed in reality not all people have become good mothers. But as the kid, we
cannot deny the fact that our mother is our mother. I try to look at things positively.
Starting from conception to nine months of pregnancy, a mother has struggled between
life and death, especially at labor. A mother?s sacrifice is so great and risky. A good
mother gives the best.
A good mother has wisdom. The question is what is that wisdom like?
1. A wise woman loves her family (10-12)
Gems are precious. Usually people do not owe precious things in great numbers,
unless they?re the sellers. Gems are precious because they are rare and unique. The
Hebrew word used here describes perfection, the best and also full of potential. That
means such mothers are diligent and creative. Such a mother is hard to find, like a gem
(compare this to Proverbs 8:11). A wise mother is not careless, she is responsible.
In this modern time, we hardly find a mother like this. In Indonesia we find many
young mothers who still act like teenagers after giving birth. They go shopping
everywhere, while their kids are left to baby sitters. There are even young mothers who
are afraid of losing their beauty that they refuse to milk their babies. It?s not surprising to
see babies crying in their mothers? arms because maybe they do not recognize their
mothers. Unfortunately not all baby sitters are nice. There was a baby-sitter who drugged
the baby so that the baby would sleep. This all happened because the young mother was
busy with herself, ignoring her baby.
Why do we say that wise mothers are precious? Proverbs 31:11 says that such
precious women can be trusted by their husband as money managers as well, never
leaving their husband feeling anxious about losing money. That way, such a life keeps
supporting, building, motivating and strengthening her husband. She will never burden
her husband. Life in this earth is hard as it is for a man to work, he does not need a wife
who cannot understand and support him. He can be very stressed out. That?s why in
Proverb 25:24, Solomon wrote: “It is better to dwell in the corner of the housetop, than
with a brawling woman and in a wide house.” (KJV).
Do you know the difference between the good and the bad mother, or true and
fake mother? Like I said, when anointed as king, Solomon did not pray for useless things
from God. He did not ask for wealth, but he asked for wisdom (I Kings 3:9, KJV)” Give
therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern
between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?” Sure enough,
since then Solomon had to face a very difficult problem which required God?s wisdom.
“Then came there two women, that were harlots, unto the king, and stood before him.
And the one woman said, O my lord, I and this woman dwell in one house; and I was
delivered of a child with her in the house. And it came to pass the third day after that I
was delivered, that this woman was delivered also: and we were together; there was no
stranger with us in the house, save we two in the house. And this woman's child died in
the night; because she overlaid it. And she arose at midnight, and took my son from
