Why Me Lord

1. DAVID SOUGHT SOMEONE IN NEED (VS 1)

• David was looking for someone of the house of Jonathan to show kindness to

• This was because of the friendship between the two and Jonathans many sacrifices for his friend David

• This creates a picture of God’s desire to show kindness to the people of this world

• II Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.”

• God’s plan, since the fall of man has been one of reconciliation of us to him

• NOAH:

a. Man sinned continually

b. God chose an escape (Ark) (Redemption)

c. Chose A Person to execute escape plan (Noah)

d. Sent Judgment on Sin (Flood)

e. Eight Survived

• SODOM AND GOMORRAH

a. Man sinned continually

b. God chose an escape (redemption)

c. Chose person to execute escape plan (Abraham)

d. Sent Judgment

e. 3 Survived; Lots wife died for disobedience after the destruction

• THE WORLD TODAY

a. Man sins continually

b. God chose an escape (The Cross)

c. Chose the person to execute escape plan (Jesus Christ)

d. Will send Judgment

e. Those who accept will escape the destruction

• As we think of God’s willingness to spare us from the destruction to come we must say “Why me Lord?”

2. WE MUST COME HUMBLY TO THE THRONE (VS 6)

• We, like Mephibosheth must come to God with respect to his position as our creator, Father, Savior and Lord

• “…he fell on his face, and did reverence.”

• Matthew 18:4 “Whosoever therefore shall humble himself as the little child, the same is greatest in the kingdom of heaven.”

• Children are a picture of innocence

• James 4:10 “Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and he shall lift you up.”

• When humble we are more apt to mold to the will of God

• Being humble should never be confused with being ‘weak’

• Matthew 5:5 “Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.”

• Pride goes before a fall, and when we seek to serve God and humble ourselves before him and his grace shows upon us we must ask ourselves “Why me Lord?”

3. GOD’S GRACE ABOUNDS

• I John 2:12 “I write unto you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for his name’s sake.”

• Mephibosheth had done nothing to deserve the privilege to sit at the kings table, no merit was found

• David had love and grace in his heart

• Mephibosheth was lame (II Samuel 4:4), which in the custom of the day would have been an outcast and not allowed anywhere near the king or his table for fear of spreading the ‘uncleanness’ to the king

• We can not work our way to salvation; it is only attainable through accepting the love of Jesus Christ for us

• Ephesians 2:8-9 “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:” “Not of works, lest any man should boast.”

• We do not become perfect when we are saved; nor do we ever get that way, but God still chooses to use us

• Romans 5:8 “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

• While are yet sinners (lame) God is calling for us just as David called for Mephibosheth when he was lame

• David counted Mephibosheth worthy to eat with him because he was of the house of Jonathan.

• God counts us worthy when we become of the house of his Son.

• When we are forgiven despite our sin we must ask ourselves, “Why me Lord?”

4. WE’VE BECOME A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD THROUGH JESUS CHRIST (VS 9-11)

• Because of God’s grace we are given the ‘highest place’

• David’s provision for Mephibosheth came through the servants working for him and allowing him to be as one of the kings son’s

• Philippians 4:19 “But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

• God’s provision is to meet our every need

• Psalms 34:4-5 “Delight thyself also in the LORD; and he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.” “Commit thy way unto the LORD: trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.”

• When we become Christians our ‘desires’ change in that we begin to seek things of the Lord and when we give all to God he will provide us with our hearts greatest desires

• Romans 8:17 “And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified.”
