Why Don't You Just Grow Up
Contributed by Cameron Whaley on Jul 2, 2005 (message contributor)
Summary: A sermon that focuses on maturing in wisdom as a Christian; that wisdom that one gains as he/she learns to live like Christ
Have these words ever been said to you? or Have you ever said these words yourself?
“Why don’t you just grow up?”
These words are said when someone is seen as not acting the way that they “should.”
I. Wisdom for the Mature
As Paul was speaking to churches throughout the Mediterranean region, they were wanting to know how to be wise.
Paul kept saying that he wasn’t speaking out of wisdom.
“Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature…”
- Who are the Mature?
Not necessarily who are the mature ones, but instead, “Am I mature?”
Perfect instead of Mature
Ephesians 4:13 – “until we all attain to the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a mature man, to the measure of the stature which belongs to the fullness of Christ.”
- How Do they Gain Wisdom?
School is not the answer for this wisdom.
II. Wisdom that is not in this world
- From Where is this Wisdom?
- Why Do Some Not Understand?
1 Corinthians 1:20 – “Where is the wise man? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?”
III. Wisdom that is Mysterious
- What is the Mystery?
Romans 16:25-27 – “Now to Him who is able to establish you according to my gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret for long ages past, but now is manifested, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, has been made known to all the nations, leading to obedience of faith; to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, be the glory forever. Amen.”
