Here are the questions I propose we ask: What is sin? How does it happen? What results from sin? How does God respond to sin? Why does God allow sin?
Today we will look at the sin of the first people on earth. Please open your Bibles to the very beginning…. Look at Genesis 1:1….
And so, everything started with God; God is the creator of everything as described in this first chapter in Genesis. We then read in Genesis 2:1…
V7…. V15-18….
So God created the first human being, was given a free will to choose, but was given a simple instruction not eat from one specific tree!
Now let us read v25 of Genesis 2 all the way to Genesis 4:2……
And so, God provided everything for the first man and woman in the Garden of Eden, they were free and had no shame.
But then look again at v6 of Genesis 3…..
The world started with 2 people and they sinned and throughout the ages as the world got populated, people continued to sin. And so, God placed it in writing for us about 2000 years ago in Romans 3:23 “All have sinned and fall short of the Glory of God”!
The world started with 2 people and now in the year 2022AD, there are over 8 Billion people in this world who continue to sin against God! Just think for a moment of how many people who continue to sin but God allowed and continue to allow people to live on earth!
It started with just 2 people who sinned, then there were billions of people who lived before us, then today 8 billion alive (that is 8 plus 9 zeros after it) are sinning against God, and who knows how many more billions God will allow to live on earth who sin against Him; but yet, people question God’s love? Why is God allowing so many people to live who sin against Him? God has all the qualities listed for us in Galatians 5:22-23 – God has love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control.
How good is God? God is good all the time even though billions of people sin! And so, that is one of the questions we need to answer, What is sin? Sin is simply going against what God says! God provided a life for Adam and Eve and all the food in the world except for one tree, Adam and Eve chose to eat from that forbidden tree! Let’s answer our next question: How does sin happen?
For Adam and Eve, they knew what God said and had the power, the choice to obey; there was no need to them for that forbidden fruit! But, what do we note which led to sin for Adam and Eve: The devil was there to question what God said, the fruit was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and they chose with their own wisdom that there was something to gain! As Christians today, we must watch out for these traps for sins.
Now what was the result of sin, disobeying God? There were many bad consequences, you can review them again later, but the main result of sin was exactly what God said, Adam and Eve could no longer live forever; their entire being started decaying as soon as they sinned! What is the result of sin? – nothing good! God is good all the time, all the time God is good, right? So, it makes sense that when a person disobeys God, nothing good will happen!
There will always be consequences to sin; but is that the only way God responds to sin? Didn’t we also note earlier that God is love, peace, forbearing, kind, good, faithful, gentle and self-controlled? How do we see these things after Adam and Eve sinned?
First of all, Adam and Eve didn’t die right away (God could have just said, you sinned, you’re dead!) But not only did God give Adam and Eve a life to live (no longer forever however), God clothed them then gave them children!
How else did God show his love even though Adam and Eve sinned? Many can easily miss the Promise of God! Look again at Gen. 3:14-15...
God gave a Promise to give a final judgment to both the spiritual and physical world! A person will come from human being Eve and the devil will strike His heel but He will crush the devil! If we look at Scriptures and history, there is Only One person who was hurt by the devil but will crush the devil; none other than Jesus Christ!
Although the first sin in the world happened, God promised the Messiah/Savior to reign over both the physical and spiritual worlds! Why does God allow sin? God allows sin so that people can know how good and perfect God is and to demonstrate that God is a God of love. We should all memorize Romans 5:8 - But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us!
