Who’s Your Hero?

1 Peter 3:18

Introduction

I’ve got a picture to show you. Anybody here know who this is?

John Wayne. He’s my most favoritest coolest actor guy in the whole world.

He’s my hero in the movies.

Here’s another picture. It’s hard to see, but it’s me standing next to Brad Radke. He’s a pitcher for the Minnesota Twins. He’s one of my heroes in sports.

I have some other heroes, too. My dad is my favorite hero on earth. My dad is a real-life hero. He’s saved lives and delivered babies, and all sorts of stuff when he worked on an ambulance crew. I’m so proud of my dad that I named one of my sons after him.

But I have one person who is my ultra-most hero of all time.

Can you take a guess who that might be?

It’s Jesus! He’s the best hero someone could have, and I want to tell you just three reasons why He is my best hero.

First,…

I. He’s the Creator.

Listen to what the Bible says about Jesus in the book of Colossians:

For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him.

Now I don’t know about you, but I’d say that you’d have to be pretty big to create everything, wouldn’t you?

How many have looked through a telescope at night to look at the stars and planets?

Pretty nifty, huh?

And you know those stars and things are a long way away.

The Bible says that God put all those stars in place and calls them each by name. Now that’s awesome. I mean, we can’t even count all the stars, but God has a name for each one.

I can barely remember the names of my 5 kids – I can’t imagine trying to remember the names of all those countless stars.

But Jesus is big – He’s the Creator.

The next reason He’s my hero is that not only did make it all, but…

II. He keeps it all together.

I read a verse a couple minutes ago, but let me read the next one, okay?

17 He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.

How many of you think you’ve got a lot to do in your life?

I mean, you’ve got school, homework, a job… What? You don’t have a job? You mean you get to go HOME after school? You don’t have to go work in a factory or anything?

Boy, have you got it easy!

I like to think I stay pretty busy. I am the pastor of a church, so I have to get sermons ready every week, I teach two classes at the Christian High School, and I have other work I do, to.

Not to mention the fact that I have a wife and 5 kiddos, plus a foreign exchange student from Poland that lives with us.

I’m a busy guy!

And if I don’t keep up, things could go haywire in a big hurry. I have to keep running around like a chicken with my head cut off trying to keep everything together.

But you know what? Jesus has to keep the whole university together. And I think I’ve got it rough!

But Jesus doesn’t have to scramble around like me in order to keep it all together, because He’s God.

He’s all-powerful, and He knows what’s going on all the time everywhere.

Now that’s cool.

But here’s the main reason Jesus is my hero:

III. He cares for me.

You would think that Jesus would have enough to do, what with holding the universe together, but you know what? He still cares about li’l ol’ me.

I come to Jesus and tell Him I’m tired, or sick, or whatever, or maybe I’m excited about something, and He listens!

You know what? I’m not always very good at that at my house.

Sometimes my kiddos come to me and I don’t always have the time to listen to them. That’s not good. God is helping me be better at that.

But Jesus always has time for everyone. Isn’t that great? A billion people could be praying all at the same time, and God hears everyone of them just as if only one person was praying.

So if you are praying, you know that God hears every word, and He cares very much about everything in your life.

Jesus is my hero. I hope he’s yours, too.

If He’s not, why don’t you let Him?

He loves you very much. So much that He came down from heaven to die on the cross you could go to heaven some day and be with Him.
