Who Is Jesus? and Why You Need Him as Lord and Saviour - John 14:6

Introduction

Let me begin with a question: Who is Jesus to you? For centuries, this question has been asked in countless ways—by seekers, skeptics, and followers alike.

Some say Jesus was a great teacher, others a prophet, and still others the founder of a religion. But the Bible presents Jesus as far more than these things. He is the Son of God, the Saviour of the world, and the One through whom we find eternal life.

Today, we’re going to examine the question, Who is Jesus and why do you need to accept Him as Lord and Saviour? We will answer this through three powerful truths:

Jesus is the Revelation of God.

Jesus is the Redeemer of Humanity.

Jesus is the Only Way to Salvation.

By the end of this message, I pray you will have a deeper understanding of who Jesus is, why He matters, and why you need to surrender your life to Him today.

1. Jesus is the Revelation of God

Let’s begin with Colossians 1:15: “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation.” (NLT)

The apostle Paul tells us that Jesus is the visible image (Greek: eikon) of the invisible God. This word means “representation” or “manifestation.” In other words, Jesus is not just a reflection of God—He is God made visible.

Hebrews 1:3 reinforces this: “The Son radiates God’s own glory and expresses the very character of God.” (NLT)

Jesus Himself declared in John 14:9: “Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father!” (NLT)

Through Jesus, we see God’s character—His love, mercy, holiness, and truth. Jesus came to show us what God is like in a way that we could understand and relate to.

If you want to know God, look to Jesus. He is the full and perfect revelation of who God is.

Seek a personal relationship with Him through prayer and Scripture, because in knowing Jesus, you know the heart of God.

Think of a telescope. Without one, the stars seem distant and indistinct. But a telescope brings clarity and reveals the beauty of the heavens. Jesus is like that telescope—He brings the infinite God into clear view for us.

Tim Keller said, “Jesus didn’t just bring us the message of God—He is the message of God.”

2. Jesus is the Redeemer of Humanity

Let’s now turn to Romans 5:8: “But God showed his great love for us by sending Christ to die for us while we were still sinners.” (NLT)

The word “redeemer” carries the idea of buying back or setting free. In the Old Testament, the concept of redemption often referred to freeing someone from slavery. In the New Testament, Jesus is the ultimate Redeemer who sets us free from the slavery of sin and death.

Colossians 1:19-20 says: “For God in all his fullness was pleased to live in Christ, and through him God reconciled everything to himself. He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.” (NLT)

Through His death, Jesus took the penalty for our sins. The Greek word for “peace” (eirene) in Colossians 1:20 indicates a restored relationship, not just an absence of conflict.

Recognise that you cannot save yourself. Only Jesus, through His sacrifice, can redeem you and restore your relationship with God.

Live in the freedom that Christ has purchased for you—freedom from guilt, shame, and condemnation.

A famous story tells of a boy who built a small boat and lost it in the river. Later, he saw it for sale in a shop and bought it back, saying, “You’re mine twice—once because I made you and once because I bought you.” Jesus says the same to us—He made us, and He redeemed us through the cross.

Charles Spurgeon wrote, “Jesus is the great central fact of redemption. He is not only the Redeemer, but redemption itself.”

3. Jesus is the Only Way to Salvation

Finally, let’s look at John 14:6: “Jesus told him, ‘I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one can come to the Father except through me.’” (NLT)

Jesus makes an exclusive claim: He is the way (Greek: hodos), meaning the path or road to God. He is the truth (aletheia), embodying the full reality of God’s promises. And He is the life (zoe), offering eternal life to all who believe.
