WHAT WILL I DO WITH TODAY?

By Wade Martin Hughes, Sr. Kyfingers@aol.com

TEXT:

Psalm 90:12 So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.

Psalm 118:24 This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

I. GOD’S GREAT MERCY GIVES US TIME.

TIME IS PART OF GOD’S DESIGN.

Genesis 1:5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

A. Time is broken up into millenniums, centuries, decades, years, months, weeks, days, hours, minutes, seconds for the benefit of man.

B. The little boy came to his Grandfather and said:

Paw can I live right for all my life?

Paw thought and said, No, Grandson it is absolutely impossible to live a perfect life for a life time.

The Grandson returned and said, Paw, How about for a year, could I live right for a year?

The Grandfather thought and answered, NO, You can not live a good life for a year.

The Grandson asked his Grandfather, How about a month? NO!

How about a week? NO!

How about for a day? The Grandfather thought much and said NO! You can’t!

The Grandson said Paw, How about a hour? NO!

Then the Grandson asked the Grandfather, Paw, How about for a MOMENT?

Could I live right for a moment?

After much thought the Grandfather replied, Yes, maybe you could live right for a moment!

The grandson returned later and said, Paw, then I want to live my life moment by moment!!!

C. IF TIME WAS ONE LONG, ENDLESS DAY, IF WE MADE A MISTAKE, IF WE SINNED, THE WHOLE WOULD BE MESSED UP.

D. God’s great mercy broke time into small increments if we mess up today, tomorrow we will have a brand new, fresh day to start over again.

II. THIS DAY HAS A PURPOSE! THE GIFT OF THIS 24 HOURS HAS A DESIGN. WILL WE HEED THE DESIGN?

Psalm 118:24 This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

A. DEFINE:

DAY:

The time of light between one night and the next.

The period of rotation of the earth on it’s axis.

The solar day of 24 hours.

The time established to use for work.

365 days in a year.

B. TODAY:

The present time.

On this day.

Now.

III. WISE PEOPLE LEARN TO RECOGNIZE SEASONS!

A. SEASON:

A period of time characterized or marked by frequent activity.

B.WISDOM RECOGNIZES SPIRITUAL SEASONS.

B. PEOPLE ARE VERY WRONG WHEN THEY SAY THAT TIME WILL GET SO MESSED UP THAT THE SEASONS WILL NOT FUNCTION AS THEY SHOULD.

Genesis 8:22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

C. JUST AS THERE ARE SEAONS ON EARTH THERE ARE SPIRITUAL SEASONS.

Galatians 6:9 And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap,if we faint not.

2 Tim. 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

Luke 12:42 And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?

IV. ONE OF OUR GREATEST SINS WE COMMIT IS TO THINK WE HAVE PLENTY OF TIME.

A. LOT LINGERED? WHY? WHY LOT?

Genesis 19:16 And while he lingered, the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the Lord being merciful unto him: and they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

B. PLENTY:

Full, more than enough.

A large number or supply to finish the work or job.

More than enough.

More than sufficient. Abundance.

C. In delay there lies not plenty.

V. PROCRASTINATION CAN BE A TERRIBLE SIN.

Acts 24:25 And as he reasoned of righteousness, temperance, and judgment to come Felix trembled, and answered, Go thy way for this time; when I have a

convenient season, I will call for thee.

A. NEVER PUT OFF UNTIL TOMORROW WHAT YOU CAN PUT OFF UNTIL NEXT

WEEK?

B. PROCRASTINATE:

To put off intentionally and habitually.

To put off doing something that needs to be done.

To delay.

C. Procrastination is the thief of time.

D. Procrastination is the art of being stuck in yesterday.

E. YESTERDAY IS GONE, TOMORROW MAY NEVER BE ---

BUT I HAVE TODAY...

VI. TODAY IS A GIFT THAT GOD GIVES ME!

WHAT I DO WITH TODAY IS MY GIFT BACK TO GOD?

A. PEOPLE DO NOT PLAN TO FAIL, THEY FAIL TO PLAN AND THUS FAILURE LOOMS HIDDEN IN THE LACK OF A PLAN.
