Summary: When we say we "preach the word", what do we mean? Just what IS "the Word"?

Intro: Ministers are often admonished to "preach the

word" by members of their flock. Just what are they

asking? What IS the Biblical definition of the Word?

From John and other passages, we can discover

I. The Word is SCRIPTURE

*2 Timothy 3:16; Hebrew 4:12

A. It is inspired (God-breathed)

B. It is profitable

1. for doctrine

2. for reproof

3. for correction

4. for training in righteousness

*The inspired WRITTEN WORD points us to Jesus,

the INCARNATE WORD:

II. The Word is the SON

*JOHN 1:1-4, PHILIPPIANS 2:5-11

A. His preexistence (Jn 1:1-4)

B. His incarnation (Philippians 2:5-11)

C. His reception (John 1:12)

D. His substitution (Christ died "for our sins")

E. His resurrection

F. His ascension

G. His intercession

H. His return

III. The word is the SPIRIT:

*The INCARNATE WORD (JESUS) has now dispatched

His Holy Spirit into the world. He is a person

and his assigned tasks are given to us:

A. He regenerates us (John 3)

B. He seals our salvation (Eph 4:30)

C. He guides us into all truth (John 14, 15, 16)

D. He comforts us

E. He enables us to resist when tempted.(I Cor 10:13)

F. He keeps us on the right path

G. He reminds us of what Jesus said to us.

H. He radiates God’s power through us.

Conclusion:

So, the Written Word(Scripture) points us to

the Incarnate Word (Son) who has dispatched

the Indwelling Word (Spirit)to us until that

day when Jesus returns in Power and Glory.

Are we preaching the WORD??
