To explore the imagery in Revelation 5:8, emphasizing the righteousness of Christ, the power of prayer, and the concept of our prayers as a pleasing aroma to God.
Good morning, beloved family. We gather here today to delve into the profound mysteries of Revelation 5:8, as we meditate on the righteousness of Christ, the power of prayer, and the aroma of Christ. In the words of A. W. Tozer, "The key to prayer is simply praying." Simple, yet so powerfully true!
Opening Scripture Reading – The Scripture for today, Revelation 5:8 states, "And when he had taken it, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb. Each one had a harp and they were holding golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of God's people." It's a rich imagery that presents prayer not just as a plea, but as a sweet fragrance that ascends to the throne of God.
The righteousness of Christ is the idea that Jesus Christ, the Son of God, lived a perfect, sinless life, and through His death and resurrection, we are made righteous before God. This righteousness is not something we can earn or achieve on our own, but it is a gift, a divine exchange, where Christ takes our sin and gives us His righteousness.
A. The righteousness of Christ is an essential element of the Gospel message. It is the good news that God, in His infinite love and mercy, has made a way for us to be reconciled to Him. This reconciliation is not based on our own merit or good deeds, but on the righteousness of Christ. It is His perfect obedience, His sinless life, His sacrificial death, and His triumphant resurrection that makes us righteous before God.
B. This righteousness is not merely a legal or forensic concept, but it is deeply relational. It is about being in right relationship with God. It is about being accepted, loved, and cherished by God, not because of what we have done, but because of what Christ has done for us. The righteousness of Christ is not just about being declared innocent, but it is about being declared beloved. It is about being welcomed into the family of God, being adopted as sons and daughters, being co-heirs with Christ.
C. The righteousness of Christ also has profound implications for our daily lives. It is not just a theological concept to be studied, but it is a reality to be lived. It is about walking in the footsteps of Christ, following His example, and living out His teachings. It is about being transformed by the renewing of our minds, being conformed to the image of Christ, and being empowered by the Holy Spirit to live a life of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control.
D. The righteousness of Christ is also a source of hope and comfort. It is the assurance that no matter how much we stumble and fall, no matter how much we struggle with sin, we are still loved and accepted by God because of the righteousness of Christ. It is the assurance that our salvation is secure, not because of our own strength or perseverance, but because of the steadfast love and faithfulness of Christ. It is the assurance that we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us.
Transition – The righteousness of Christ is a mystery that we will never fully comprehend this side of eternity. It is a mystery that humbles us, that fills us with awe and wonder, that drives us to worship and adoration. It is a mystery that challenges us, that calls us to repentance and faith, that invites us to take up our cross and follow Christ. It is a mystery that comforts us, that gives us hope and courage, that assures us of God's unfailing love and mercy.
