WHAT’S IN A NAME?

I. WE TAKE MANY THINGS TOO LIGHTLY.

WE LACK A GOOD HOLY FEAR AND RESPECT FOR THE DEEPER THINGS OF GOD.

Our God is eternal, ominpotent, omnipresent,

omciscient.

Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the

Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Isaiah 26:4 Trust ye in the Lord for ever: for in the Lord Jehovah is everlasting strength:

Psalm 83:18 That men may know that thou, whose name alone is Jehovah, art the most high over all the earth.

II. JEHOVAH - A HOLY NAME OF GOD!

Exodus 6:3 And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name Jehovah was I not known to them.

A. Want to talk about MOUNTAIN TOP EXPERIENCES?

I always have a MOUNTAIN TOP EXPERIENCE. Always!

I am either on top of the mountain, or the mountain is on top of me?

B. YOU CAN TELL A LOT ABOUT A NAME ---

C. God identified Himself to Moses as "I AM" OR "I AM THAT I AM."

This was a statement that God could be trusted and that He was a COVENANT KEEPING GOD.

D. JEHOVAH IS A SPECIAL AND SIGNIFICANT NAME.

E. Many names of God have to do with His title.

Adonai ---Lord

Greek word: Kurios --- Lord

F. The name Jehovah was never spoken by the people of God.

Only the High Priest pronounced and said Jehovah.

He only said the name once a year at the great day: the DAY OF ATONEMENT.

Then as the High Priest spoke this HOLY, SACRED NAME he was in the MOST HOLY PLACE.

G. When God’s people were reading the Bible or a book that had the name Jehovah they would speak the name ADONAI --- WHICH MEANS LORD.

III. JEHOVAH - JIREH:

A. JEHOVAH-JIREH:

Jehovah sees the need.

God will provide.

B. This was first spoken on Mount Moriah as Abraham made a DECLARATION BY FAITH, GOD WILL PROVIDE THE LAMB.

Genesis 22:14 And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of the Lord it shall be seen.

C. MANY SUGGEST THIS IS A STATEMENT ON THIS LINE:

WHEN MAN FACES HIS EXTREMITY IT IS GOD’S GREATEST OPPORTUNITY.

IV. JEHOVAH-NISSI:

A. Jehovah -Nissi means God is the banner or flag that flies over His people.

We know His banner over us is LOVE!

Exodus 17:15 And Moses built an altar, and called the name of it Jehovah-nissi:

B. In Moses day, Moses came to build an altar on top of the hill.

There was a fierce battle going on. As Moses lifted his hands they prevailed.

As Moses’ hands tired, the battle went sore against them.

C. Aaron and Hur pull up a rock for Moses to sit on, and they get under the man of God’s arms and help support Moses.

A very sweet victory was wrought that day.

V. JEHOVAH-SHALOM:

Judges 6:24 Then Gideon built an altar there unto the Lord, and called it Jehovah-shalom: unto this day it is yet in Ophrah of the Abi-ezrites.

A. Gideon was a God called commander of the army.

Gideon had feelings of littleness and felt not qualified to perform the battle set before

the army.

B. God enables those that He calls.

C. In Gideon’s self-doubt --- he might doubt God.

So Gideon built an altar.

D. Then an ANGEL OF THE LORD’S HOST VISITED GIDEON AND GAVE HIM ASSURANCE THAT GOD WAS WITH HIM.

E. Gideon brings forth a new dimension of God:

JEHOVAH-SHALLOM:

The God that brings victory and peace.

VI. JEHOVAH-SHAMMAH:

Ezekiel 48:35 It was round about eighteen thousand measures: and the name of the city from that day shall be, The Lord is there.

A. Ezekiel was very concerned for his people and the nation. God appeared unto Ezekiel in a vision and spoke to Ezekiel, don’t be afraid, GOD IS THERE. God is in Jerusalem.

B. Jehovah-Shammah:

A God that is with us.

C. Jehovah-Shammah is the WORD OF GOD REVEALED.

This title is a type of the Gospel.

D. THE BIBLE IS NOT BIRTHDAY CAKE, IT IS DAILY BREAD.

We need to daily read and know God’s word.

VII. JEHOVAH-TSIDKENU

Jeremiah 23:6 In his days Judah shall be saved, and Israel shall dwell safely: and this is his name whereby he shall be called, THE LORD OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

A. Jehovah-Tsidkenu is the LORD OF OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS.

B. Man has a serious problem with our righteousness. It is as filthy rags.

Romans 3:10 As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one:

C. We were hopeless, then a wonderful God built a bridge that will allow us to come under His protection!
