WHAT JUDAS MISSED-III—John 13:18--17:26(13:31-38)
OR--‘WHILE YOU WERE OUT/AWAY’
Attention:
Lesson Before the Lesson:
A college professor had the mysterious habit of walking into the lecture hall each morning, removing a tennis ball from his jacket pocket.
He would set it on the corner of the podium. After giving the lecture for the day, he would once again pick up the tennis ball, place it into his jacket pocket, & leave the room. No one ever understood why he did this, until one day...when a student fell asleep during the lecture. The professor never missed a word of his lecture while he walked over to the podium, picked up the tennis ball & threw it, hitting the sleeping student squarely on the top of the head.
The next day, the professor walked into the room, reached into his jacket, removed a baseball.
No one ever fell asleep in his class the rest of the semester!
The professor did not want any of the students to miss any vital information.
More importantly, you should never ‘willingly’ miss anything God has in store for you!
The events of our text take place—Shortly after Jesus Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem as Her promised Messianic King(FYI—when the pressure was on, this same crowd & others yelled, “Crucify Him! Crucify Him!”)...
& during the Passover supper, in which Jesus’ provided an example of Christian humility for His disciples(including Judas Iscariot) by washing their feet as would a servant...
*Judas missed the entirety of Jesus’ revelations & exhortations which took place from the time of Judas’ leaving the Lord’s supper(13:30) until he arrived in the Garden of Gethsemane, with the detachment of soldiers, chief priests & Pharisees to arrest Jesus!(18:3; Mat. 27:27)—[Roman cohort(speira—the tenth part of a legion=600 soldiers)]. That time takes in everything between 13:31--17:26.
Need:
*Every time you are ‘too busy’ to take part in a gathering of the Church of God!
*Every time you think God cannot use you to do what He has plainly shown you
*Every time you ‘avoid’ God’s plain direction
*Every time you discourage another person!
*Every time you do not fulfill an appointment by God...
...Then You are missing out on something vital & life-changing! We have found that Judas Missed many vital life lessons because of his unbelieving attitude AND because of his physical absence...
Judas missed...

Judas missed...His PERVERSE ROLE In GLORIFYING GOD
From this point(14:31) until the end of chapter 16(:33) is considered by Bible students as Jesus’ ‘Farewell Discourse.’—CTGATJ
‘The High Priestly Prayer’ of chapter 17 is also a continuation of & closure to the ‘Farewell Discourse.’ After the ‘Prayer,’ Jesus & His 11 disciples went out over the Brook Kidron, to the Mount of Olives where they entered the Garden of Gethsemane(18:1).
*Judas missed the entirety of that ‘discourse.’ He missed what took place from the time of his leaving the supper(13:30) until he arrived with the detachment of soldiers, chief priests & Pharisees(18:3)![Roman cohort(speira—the tenth part of a legion=600 soldiers)(18:3; Mat. 27:27)]
Lk. 17:1-2—“Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come! It would be better for him if a millstone were hung around his neck, & he were thrown into the sea, than that he should offend one of these little ones.”
Jer. 1:13-16—“And the word of the LORD came to me the second time, saying, “What do you see?” And I said, “I see a boiling pot, & it is facing away from the north.” Then the LORD said to me: “Out of the north calamity shall break forth On all the inhabitants of the land. For behold, I am calling All the families of the kingdoms of the north,” says the LORD; “They shall come & each one set his throne At the entrance of the gates of Jerusalem, Against all its walls all around, And against all the cities of Judah. I will utter My judgments Against them concerning all their wickedness, Because they have forsaken Me, Burned incense to other gods, And worshiped the works of their own hands.”
