Summary: The sermon shares what God showed John. He showed him he could carry him, He showed John a mountain, He showed John what's coming down, and he showed John a River of Life.
What God Showed John? Revelation 21:10, 22 22:5
1. God showed John he could carry him, John was carried away to great High Mountain and was showed
• 10And in the spirit he carried me away to a great, high mountain and showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God.
• In Revelation 21:10, John declares that he was carried away "in the spirit" to a great and high mountain.
• It indicates that it was a vision trance which entails a literal transport from one place to another.
• This type of transport also occurs in Acts 8:39-40 when the Spirit snatches Philip away from the Ethiopian eunuch.
• The imagery closely parallels Ezekiel 40:2 in which Ezekiel is brought in "visions of God" to Israel and is set down upon "a very high mountain" (NRSV).
2. God showed John a high Mountain it is on Mountains that there is the Divine World
• Throughout the OT, mountains have been the places of encounters with the divine world
• For example, Abraham encounters God's provision that spares his son Isaac on a mountain (Genesis 22),
• Moses receives the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai (Genesis 19:3-24:18) and is shown the land of Canaan from Mount Nebo (Deuteronomy 34).
• In addition, the divine encounter between God and the prophets of Baal occurred on Mount Carmel (1 Kings 18:19-
3. What God showed John "what’s coming down"
• Showed me the holy city Jerusalem coming down out of heaven from God.
• What's coming down is " no need" of sun 23And the city has no need of sun or moon to shine on it, for the glory of God is its light, and its lamp is the Lamb.
• No need of gates Its gates will never be shut by day—and there will be no night there
• No need of worry about those that inhabit this place 27But nothing unclean will enter it, nor anyone who practices abomination or falsehood , but only those who are written in the Lamb’s book of life.
4. God showed John a ever flowing substance a "River" of life
• I believe it the eternal cleansing of our souls 22Then the angel* showed me the river of the water of life, bright as crystal, flowing from the throne of God and of the Lamb 2through the middle of the street of the city.
• God showed John the restoration of all things On either side of the river is the tree of life* with its twelve kinds of fruit, producing its fruit each month; and the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations.
• God shows us all this splendor "Thing s will or can return as usual "
• I found this litany it is sometimes how we feel at moments of crisis, distress, anxiety, and fear. This world is broken and cannot satisfy. We face terror and darkness, sorrow and pain. We long for a place where all is restored, and we hunger no more. We hope for a world with no mourning, no tears – a world with unending joy. This text tells us that the world will be this one day
There is a story following the great Chicago Fire of 1871, a shopkeeper returned to what had been his shop but was now a smoldering ruin. He set up a table and put up a sign that read, "Everything lost except wife, children and hope. Business will resume as usual tomorrow morning."
