Summary: The sermon asks the prophet and us what are we doing here?
“What Are You Doing Here?” 1 Kings 19:1-15
1. The scriptures tells all that Elijah had done.
Elijah last great feat he had just came down from my Mt Carmel
It is here he alone defeated the god Baal here He slays 450 prophets of Baal
Problem arises the queen Jezebel is furious because Elijah recently called her out for stealing Naboths Vineyard and she was even more furious after he killed her prophets
2. Jezebel swore an oath
Her oath slaughter Elijah 2 So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.”
3.Elijah was afraid
3Then he was afraid; he got up and fled for his life, and came to Beer-sheba,
He was simply weary and worn he went a day’s journey into the wilderness, and came and sat down under a solitary broom tree. He asked that he might die: ‘It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life,’ 5Then he lay down under the broom tree and fell asleep.
4.Notice the word of the Lord Came when Ministry, Church, Sunday School, Bible study, Revivals, life, becomes just too much
The word came at the cave when Elijah was desperate remember at the Juniper tree He asked that he might die: ‘It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life,
The word came when Elijah felt defeated by the pursuit, pressures, problems of a Jezebel It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life
The word came when he was distracted by his issues and forgot the greatness of The God of Israel. It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life
The Word came when he felt all dignified about himself Elijah began to believe that this — this ministry thing — was all about him. Well think about it , You kill 450 prophets of Baal, you start to think you’re something. You call down rain after a three-year drought, and you start to think you’re sort of powerful.
4. God Grace is amazing, His mercy is kindness and filled with much sympathy
The Word Came unto Him and said, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
Elijah complains about others or the Israelites’ God-forsaken ways and claims to be the only faithful Servant left.
The Lord asks him to stand before him on the holy mountain. A great wind (strong enough to split mountains and break rocks in pieces) came up. After that an earthquake, followed by a firestorm; But the Lord wasn’t in the wind or the earthquake or the fire.
Elijah went to the cave entrance and “there came a voice to him” “What are you doing here, Elijah?” say this quietly
5. Gods Response to Elijah “GO” anoint Hazel as king over Aram.
When you’re desperate “Go” God did not remove the circumstance but Gods presence was with him in the circumstance
When you’re defeated “GO” one may feel defeated as a loss of a loved one, loss of job, loss of desire to even live Sometimes wondering if not living is better than living like this?
When you’re distracted God says “GO” distracted by the great big to do list, fatigued, busyness,
6. God asks all “What are we Doing here”?
What are you working on here? Yes here we are called to do something here and out there we need to be working on the building for my Lord for my Lord
What are you doing here running from God? We do by saying or thinking “someone else is better equipped”
God asks what are we doing here in the state of giving up? God tells Elijah “GO” you still have work God gave Elijah further prophetic mission work to accomplish, rather than permitting him to wallow in self-pity
