This sermon encourages cultivating spiritual sensitivity to recognize and respond to God's leading, as exemplified by Simeon and Anna in the Gospel of Luke. Key
Good morning, beloved family of Christ. How wonderful it is to gather together in His name, to seek His wisdom, and to bask in His love. We are here, not by accident, but by divine appointment. Our Father, in His infinite wisdom, has drawn us together today to delve into His Word, to seek His truth, and to grow in our understanding of His divine will.
In the hustle and bustle of our daily lives, it can be easy to lose sight of the spiritual sensitivity that our Lord calls us to cultivate. Like a garden left untended, our spiritual senses can become dull and unresponsive if we do not take the time to nurture them. But when we do, oh, what a glorious harvest we can reap!
Our Scripture today comes from the Gospel of Luke, chapter 2, verses 22-40: [read text].
In these verses, we meet two individuals, Simeon and Anna, who exemplify the spiritual sensitivity that we are called to cultivate. They were attuned to the Spirit's leading, ready to respond in faith and obedience.
J.I. Packer once said, "Once you become aware that the main business that you are here for is to know God, most of life's problems fall into place of their own accord." As we delve into this passage, let us pray that we too would become more aware of this main business, that we would grow in our knowledge of God, and that this knowledge would guide us in all that we do.
Let us pray. Dear Heavenly Father, we thank you for your Word, which is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. As we delve into this passage, we ask that you would open our hearts and minds to receive your truth. Help us to cultivate a spiritual sensitivity that is attuned to your Spirit's leading. Guide us in our understanding and application of your Word. In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.
Beloved, as we delve into this passage, let us keep in mind the words of Simeon and Anna, two individuals who were so attuned to the Spirit's leading that they recognized the Messiah when they saw Him. May their example inspire us to cultivate a similar spiritual sensitivity, that we too might recognize and respond to God's leading in our lives.
Simeon, a man of Jerusalem, stands as a beacon of spiritual sensitivity in the biblical narrative. His life, as depicted in the Gospel of Luke, provides us with a roadmap for cultivating an awareness and responsiveness to the Holy Spirit.
Firstly, we see that Simeon was a man who lived in righteousness and devotion. The scripture tells us that he was a just and devout man. This tells us that he lived in accordance with God's laws and was dedicated to his religious duties. His life was a testament to his faith in God. This is a crucial aspect of spiritual sensitivity. To be spiritually sensitive, we must first be spiritually aligned. This means living a life that is in accordance with God's laws and being dedicated to our religious duties.
Secondly, Simeon was a man who was led by the Spirit. It was revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord's Christ. This shows us that Simeon was in tune with the Holy Spirit. He was able to hear and understand the Spirit's guidance. This is another crucial aspect of spiritual sensitivity. To be spiritually sensitive, we must be open to the Spirit's leading. This means being open to the Spirit's guidance and being willing to follow it.
Next, Simeon was patient and persistent. He was waiting for the consolation of Israel. This shows us that Simeon was patient in his faith. He was willing to wait for God's promises to be fulfilled. This means being willing to wait for God's promises to be fulfilled and being persistent in our pursuit of God.
Lastly, Simeon was a man responsive to the Spirit. He was willing to act on the Spirit's guidance. This is the final crucial aspect of spiritual sensitivity. To be spiritually sensitive, we must be responsive to the Spirit's leading. This means being willing to act on the Spirit's guidance and being willing to follow it.
Transition. Simeon's life provides us with a roadmap for cultivating spiritual sensitivity. His life shows us that spiritual sensitivity involves living a life that is by God's laws, being open to the Spirit's leading, being patient and persistent in our faith, and being responsive to the Spirit's guidance. By following Simeon's example, we too can cultivate a spiritual sensitivity that will enable us to recognize and respond to God's leading in our lives.
