What is Spiritual Warfare

Introduction

There was once a boxer who was being beaten in the ring by his opponent. Blow after blow left him with a bloody nose, swollen eyes, and immense pain. The boxer's trainer tried to encourage him, but the boxer knew the reality of the battle he was engaged in. Similarly, as Christians, we are involved in a real and intense battle known as spiritual warfare. This battle affects every aspect of our lives and has visible effects in the world around us. In order to be victorious in this battle, we must understand what spiritual warfare is and how to fight it successfully.

The Essence of the Battle

Spiritual warfare is a conflict that takes place in the invisible, spiritual realm but manifests itself in the visible, physical realm. It is a battle between invisible angelic forces that have tangible effects on our lives. The enemy in this battle is Satan and his demons, as mentioned in Ephesians 6:12. It is important to recognize that people are not the real problem; they are merely conduits for the larger battle. By understanding this, we can focus on fighting the real enemy.

A Foundational Principle for Spiritual Warfare

Everything we see in the physical realm is caused or influenced by something in the spiritual realm. There are two worldviews: the natural/materialist worldview and the spiritual worldview. The natural worldview limits itself to the physical realm and fails to address the invisible aspects of human beings, such as the soul and spirit. On the other hand, the spiritual worldview acknowledges the existence of a spiritual realm but must be based on biblical truth rather than personal beliefs or experiences.

The Impact of the Battle

Spiritual warfare has visible effects in four areas of life: personal life, family life, church life, and culture. In our personal lives, we may experience wounds from this battle, such as uncontrolled anger or emotional struggles. In families, spiritual warfare can manifest as conflicts and moral challenges. Even in the church, false teachings and doctrines can infiltrate, leading to confusion and division. Lastly, the battle in the spiritual realm influences the culture and moral standards of a nation.

The Location of the Battle

The battle of spiritual warfare takes place in the heavenly places, which refers to the spiritual realm. This realm includes the atmosphere surrounding the earth, outer space where angels operate, and the throne room of God. As believers, we have been raised up with Christ and seated with Him in the heavenly places (Ephesians 2:6). It is from this position that we can access the help we need to win the battle in the physical realm.

The Enemy in the Battle

The enemy in spiritual warfare is Satan and his demons. They seek to challenge God's glory and deceive humanity. Satan's battle strategy is to deceive us and lead us astray from devotion to Christ. He disguises himself as an "angel of light" (2 Corinthians 11:14) to trick us into believing his lies and temptations.

Conclusion

Understanding spiritual warfare is crucial for every believer. This battle is real and affects every aspect of our lives. By recognizing the enemy, his strategies, and the location of the battle, we can effectively fight and overcome. We must rely on God's strength and seek His guidance to navigate this spiritual warfare. Let us remember to do everything for the glory of God and remain steadfast in our devotion to Christ.
