Summary: These notes are deliberately basic, but are a good starting point for an exposition of this delightful Psalm.

THE 23rd PSALM

-

THE SIMILARITY DAVID AS SHEPHERD

1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

A Shepherd has sheep – Am I one of His sheep? If so, I must listen to the Shepherds voice, and follow where He leads.

-

THE SATISFACTION ABUNDANT PROVISION

2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

The Shepherd cares for His sheep, and leads into good places where there is all we need to satisfy all our longings.

-

THE SUPPORT RESTORATION & DIRECTION

3 He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

He will pick us up when we fall, and show us the right way to go. Jesus is the Good Shepherd who said He was the ‘Way’ to God.

THE SECURITY CONFIDENCE IN THE LORD

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

In the darkest experience of our lives, He will be there to see us through – ‘The valley is only a shadow’.

-

THE SUPPLY ABUNDANT PROVISION

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

This anointing is one of protection from heat, and a cup running over is to share with others.

---------------

THE SEEING A GLORIOUS PROSPECT

6 Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever.

This Good Shepherd gives us vision for the future. A certain hope of being with our Good Shepherd at last.
