Trusting God in Troubling Times Psalm 56:4

Psalm 56:4 (NLT): "I praise God for what he has promised. I trust in God, so why should I be afraid? What can mere mortals do to me?"

Introduction

Today, we delve into Psalm 56:4, a powerful verse that teaches us about trusting God in the midst of fear and adversity. King David wrote this psalm during a time of great personal distress, and his words resonate deeply with anyone who has faced fear and uncertainty. Let's explore how this verse can transform our approach to life's challenges through trust in God.

Point 1: Praise God for His Promises

Psalm 56:4a (NLT): "I praise God for what he has promised."

David begins by acknowledging the importance of God's promises. In times of trouble, remembering and praising God for His promises can bring us great comfort and hope. The Bible is filled with God's promises to His people—promises of protection, provision, and eternal life.

2 Peter 1:4 (NLT): "And because of his glory and excellence, he has given us great and precious promises. These are the promises that enable you to share his divine nature and escape the world’s corruption caused by human desires."

In this verse, Peter reminds us of the precious promises given to us through God's glory and excellence. These promises allow us to partake in the divine nature, transforming us and setting us free from the world's corruption. By embracing these promises, we are empowered to live godly lives, reflecting God's character in our daily actions.

Romans 8:28 (NLT): "And we know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them."

Paul assures us that God is sovereign, working all things together for our good. This doesn’t mean everything that happens is good, but that God can use every circumstance to fulfill His purpose in our lives. This promise gives us hope and confidence, knowing that God is orchestrating our lives for our ultimate good.

Think of a child who is afraid of the dark but feels secure knowing that their parent has promised to stay with them. Similarly, God's promises provide us with assurance and peace, even in our darkest moments. As Charles Spurgeon once said, "God never gives a promise He does not intend to fulfill."

Regularly read and meditate on God's promises in the Bible. Let these promises be the foundation of your praise, especially when facing difficulties.

Point 2: Trust in God's Protection

Psalm 56:4b (NLT): "I trust in God, so why should I be afraid?"

David's trust in God is unwavering, even when confronted by fear. Trusting God means believing that He is in control and that His plans for us are good, even when circumstances seem dire.

Isaiah 41:10 (NLT): "Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you. I will hold you up with my victorious right hand."

God’s promise of His presence and support is a source of immense comfort. He reassures us that we need not fear because He is with us, ready to strengthen and uphold us. This verse invites us to trust in God's sustaining power, even in the midst of our deepest fears and struggles.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT): "Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take."

Solomon’s wisdom calls us to trust in the Lord completely, rather than relying on our own limited understanding. By acknowledging God in all our ways and seeking His guidance, we can be assured that He will direct our paths, leading us to His perfect will.

Consider the story of Corrie ten Boom, who trusted God while hiding Jews during World War II. Despite the constant threat of discovery and death, she relied on God’s protection and found peace amidst terror. Her faith in God's promises sustained her.

In times of fear, declare your trust in God. Pray for His protection and remember that He is always with you, guiding and guarding you.

Point 3: Overcoming Fear with Faith

Psalm 56:4c (NLT): "What can mere mortals do to me?"

David concludes by recognizing the futility of fearing human threats when we are under God's protection. Faith in God's sovereignty diminishes our fear of earthly troubles.

Matthew 10:28 (NLT): "Don’t be afraid of those who want to kill your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both soul and body in hell."

Jesus encourages us to have a proper perspective on fear. Earthly threats are temporary, while God's eternal authority is supreme. This verse calls us to revere God above all, knowing that our souls are secure in Him, regardless of earthly dangers.
