Summary: When Jesus was arrested, the multitude led him away to Annas first; for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year. Annas sent Jesus bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

Found in Matthew 26:57-68,27:1; Mark 14:53,55-65; Luke 22:54,63-71 and John 18:13-14,19-24

John 18:13-14

When Jesus was arrested, the multitude led him away to Annas first; for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was the high priest that year. Now Caiaphas was he, who gave counsel to the Jews, that it was expedient that one man should die for the people. (Caiaphas said this in John 11:49-51)

John 18:24 Now Annas had sent Jesus bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

Mark 14:55 And the chief priests and all the council sought for witness against Jesus to put him to death; and found none. For many bare false witness against him, but their witness did not agree together.

********************

According to the law, two witnesses were required to put a man to death:

Deuteronomy 17:6

At the mouth of two witnesses, or three witnesses, shall he that is worthy of death be put to death; but at the mouth of one witness he shall not be put to death.

Deuteronomy 19:15

One witness shall not rise up against a man for any sin: at the mouth of two witnesses, or at the mouth of three witnesses, the matter shall be established.

Mark 14:56-59

And there arose certain, and bare false witness against him, (Matthew says “at last there came two false witnesses”).

These witnesses: We heard him say, I will destroy this temple that is made with hands, and within three days I will build another made without hands.

But their witness did not agree together.

Luke 22:63-66

And the men who held Jesus mocked him, and struck him. And when they had blindfolded him, they struck him on the face.

The men who held Jesus: Prophesy, who is it that struck you?

And they blasphemously spoke many other things against him.

And as soon as it was day, the elders of the people and the chief priests and the scribes came together and led Jesus into their council.

Mark 14:60-61

And Caiaphas, the high priest stood up in the middle.

Caiaphas: Do you answer nothing? What is it that these witness against you?

But Jesus held his peace and answered nothing.

Caiaphas: Are you the Christ, the Son of the Blessed?

Luke 22:67-70

Jesus: If I tell you, you will not believe: And if I also ask you, you will not answer me, nor let me go. Hereafter shall the Son of man sit on the right hand of the power of God.

All: Are you then the Son of God?

Jesus: You say that I am.

According to Mark, Jesus said “I am.” (14:62)

Mark 14:63-65

Then the high priest rent his clothes.

Caiaphas: What need we any further witnesses? You have heard the blasphemy: what do you think?

And they all condemned him to be guilty of death.

And some began to spit on him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say to him: Prophesy.

And the servants struck him with the palms of their hands.
