Treasures in Heaven: Transformed by Truth

Introduction:

Today, we embark on a journey into the transformative power of truth as we explore the words of our Lord Jesus Christ in Matthew 6:19-21 (NLT). In these verses, Jesus directs our attention to the eternal perspective on treasures, revealing a profound truth that has the potential to transform our lives.

Point 1: Earthly Treasures and Their Limitations

Matthew 6:19 (NLT) "Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal."

Jesus begins by highlighting the temporary and vulnerable nature of earthly treasures. These treasures are subject to decay, loss, and theft, serving as a foundation for His call to seek something more enduring.

Corrie ten Boom wisely notes, "Hold everything in your hands lightly, otherwise, it hurts when God pries your fingers open."

Proverbs 23:4-5 (NLT) - "Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich. Be wise enough to know when to quit. In the blink of an eye wealth disappears, for it will sprout wings and fly away like an eagle."

Point 2: Heavenly Treasures and Their Eternal Value

Matthew 6:20 (NLT) "Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal."

Jesus contrasts earthly treasures with heavenly treasures, emphasizing their everlasting nature. Heavenly treasures are secured in the realm of God's eternal kingdom, untouched by the decay and uncertainties of this world.

C.S. Lewis beautifully captures the essence of heavenly treasures, stating, "Aim at Heaven and you will get Earth 'thrown in': aim at Earth and you will get neither."

Colossians 3:1-2 (NLT) - "Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth."

Point 3: The Heart's Investment and Transformation

Scripture: Matthew 6:21 (NLT) "Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be."

Jesus concludes with a profound truth about the connection between treasure and the heart. Our investment of treasures, whether earthly or heavenly, reflects the true desires and priorities of our hearts. The pursuit of heavenly treasures transforms our hearts and aligns them with God's eternal purposes.

Randy Alcorn emphasizes the heart-transforming power of heavenly investments, saying, "You can't take it with you, but you can send it on ahead."

1 Timothy 6:18-19 (NLT) - "Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life."

Conclusion:

In the light of Matthew 6:19-21, we are challenged to evaluate where our treasures lie and, in turn, where our hearts are directed. May this truth transform our perspectives on wealth and possessions, leading us to invest in heavenly treasures that have eternal significance.

May our hearts be aligned with God's eternal purposes, and may the treasures we accumulate be those that endure for all eternity. As we navigate the journey of life, let our investments reflect the transformative power of truth in Jesus Christ.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen.
