Transformed by Truth: Unashamed and Decisive Faith

Introduction

Today, we’re diving deep into two powerful Scriptures: Romans 1:16 and Joshua 24:15. These verses challenge us to live out our faith boldly and make decisive commitments to God. Let’s explore how these timeless truths can transform our lives.

Romans 1:16 (NLT): "For I am not ashamed of this Good News about Christ. It is the power of God at work, saving everyone who believes—the Jew first and also the Gentile."

Joshua 24:15 (NLT): "But if you refuse to serve the Lord, then choose today whom you will serve. Would you prefer the gods your ancestors served beyond the Euphrates? Or will it be the gods of the Amorites in whose land you now live? But as for me and my family, we will serve the Lord."

Point 1: Unashamed of the Gospel

Paul’s declaration in Romans 1:16 is both a personal testimony and a call to action. The apostle boldly proclaims that he is unashamed of the Gospel because it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes. The Greek word for "ashamed" here (?pa?s????µa?) denotes a deep sense of disgrace. Paul’s confidence in the Gospel stems from its divine origin and transformative power.

2 Timothy 1:8 (NLT): "So never be ashamed to tell others about our Lord. And don’t be ashamed of me, either, even though I’m in prison for him. With the strength God gives you, be ready to suffer with me for the sake of the Good News."

John Stott famously said, "The Gospel is good news of mercy to the undeserving. The symbol of the religion of Jesus is the cross, not the scales."

Imagine a young woman named Sarah, who felt led to share her faith with her classmates. Despite facing ridicule, she stood firm, unashamed of the Gospel. Over time, her boldness led several friends to Christ. Her life exemplified Paul’s conviction in Romans 1:16.

Are there areas in your life where you feel hesitant to share your faith? Pray for courage and remember the power of the Gospel. Be bold in proclaiming the Good News, knowing that it has the power to change lives.

Point 2: Choosing Whom to Serve

Joshua’s challenge to the Israelites in Joshua 24:15 is a call to decisive commitment. The context is significant: Joshua was addressing a people who had been tempted by various idols. His statement, "As for me and my family, we will serve the Lord," underscores the importance of intentional decision-making in our spiritual journey.

Matthew 6:24 (NLT): "No one can serve two masters. For you will hate one and love the other; you will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and be enslaved to money."

A.W. Tozer once said, "The man or woman who is wholly or joyously surrendered to Christ can’t make a wrong choice—any choice will be the right one."

Think of a family deciding to serve as missionaries in a remote part of the world. Their choice wasn’t easy, but it was clear and decisive. They faced challenges, but their unwavering commitment to serve the Lord brought tremendous blessings and transformed lives in the community they served.

Reflect on your own life. Are you serving God wholeheartedly, or are there idols—money, career, relationships—that compete for your devotion? Make a decisive choice today to serve the Lord with all your heart.

Point 3: Living Out Our Faith Boldly

The combination of being unashamed of the Gospel and choosing to serve the Lord leads us to live out our faith boldly. This means our actions, words, and decisions consistently reflect our commitment to Christ.

James 2:17 (NLT): "So you see, faith by itself isn’t enough. Unless it produces good deeds, it is dead and useless."

Francis Chan put it succinctly: "Our greatest fear should not be of failure but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter."

Consider a businessman who uses his influence and resources to advance God’s kingdom. Despite the secular nature of his industry, he integrates his faith into his daily operations, impacting his employees and clients for Christ.

How can you live out your faith boldly in your workplace, school, or community? Look for opportunities to demonstrate God’s love and truth through your actions. Let your life be a testimony of your unashamed and decisive faith in Jesus.

Conclusion

Romans 1:16 and Joshua 24:15 remind us to be unashamed of the Gospel and to make a decisive choice to serve the Lord. These truths call us to live out our faith boldly in every aspect of our lives.
