Transformed by Truth: Draw Near to God James 4:8

Introduction

Today, we will delve into a powerful verse from the book of James that calls us to a closer relationship with our Creator. Let's read together:

James 4:8 (NLT): "Come close to God, and God will come close to you. Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world."

This verse contains a transformative truth about the intimacy we can have with God and the changes it necessitates in our lives. Our three points for today will be:

The Invitation to Draw Near to God

The Call to Purification

The Promise of God's Nearness

Point 1: The Invitation to Draw Near to God

James 4:8a (NLT): "Come close to God, and God will come close to you."

James is writing to believers scattered among the nations, addressing various issues in the Christian community, including worldliness and division. This invitation is a call to intimacy with God, urging believers to prioritise their relationship with Him.

The Greek word for "come close" (eggizo) means to approach or draw near, indicating a deliberate action on our part. It signifies moving towards God with the intent of fostering a deeper connection.

To draw near to God, we must intentionally seek Him through prayer, worship, and the study of His Word. It involves setting aside time and making Him a priority in our daily lives.

Hebrews 10:22 (NLT): "Let us go right into the presence of God with sincere hearts fully trusting him. For our guilty consciences have been sprinkled with Christ’s blood to make us clean, and our bodies have been washed with pure water."

This verse underscores the confidence we can have in approaching God, made possible through Christ's sacrifice.

Imagine a child running to their parent for comfort and guidance. Just as the parent welcomes the child with open arms, God eagerly awaits our approach, ready to embrace us with His love and grace.

Point 2: The Call to Purification

James 4:8b (NLT: "Wash your hands, you sinners; purify your hearts, for your loyalty is divided between God and the world."

James emphasises the need for moral and spiritual cleansing as we draw near to God. He addresses the issue of divided loyalty, urging believers to wholly commit to God.

"Washing your hands" and "purifying your hearts" are metaphors for repentance and inner transformation. The Greek word for "purify" (hagnizo) means to make clean or sanctify, indicating the need for a pure and undivided heart.

Repentance involves turning away from sin and seeking God's forgiveness. We are called to examine our hearts, remove any impurities, and renew our commitment to God.

Psalm 24:3-4 (NLT): "Who may climb the mountain of the Lord? Who may stand in his holy place? Only those whose hands and hearts are pure, who do not worship idols and never tell lies."

This verse highlights the importance of purity in approaching God's presence.

Think of a gardener who removes weeds from a garden to allow plants to flourish. Similarly, we must remove sin from our lives to cultivate a heart that fully belongs to God.

Point 3: The Promise of God's Nearness

James 4:8a (NLT): "Come close to God, and God will come close to you."

James assures believers that their efforts to draw near to God will be reciprocated. This promise provides encouragement and hope, affirming that God desires a close relationship with us.

The reciprocal nature of this promise emphasises God's faithfulness. When we take steps toward Him, He responds by drawing near to us, fostering an intimate and personal relationship.

We can find comfort and strength in knowing that God is always ready to meet us where we are. Our pursuit of Him is never in vain; He is always near, ready to guide and support us.

Jeremiah 29:13 (NLT) - "If you look for me wholeheartedly, you will find me."

This verse reinforces the idea that God reveals Himself to those who earnestly seek Him.

Consider a lighthouse guiding ships safely to shore. God’s nearness is our guiding light, providing direction and safety as we navigate the seas of life.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, James 4:8 offers us a profound invitation and promise: to draw near to God, to purify our hearts, and to experience His closeness. These truths call us to a transformed life, fully committed to Him.

Application and Call to Action:

This week, let us:
