Transformed by Truth: A Heart That Longs for God Psalm 119:33-40

Introduction:

Today, we are diving deep into Psalm 119:33-40, a passage that speaks of a heart devoted to God and transformed by His truth. This psalm is a heartfelt prayer for guidance, understanding, and revival. As we explore this scripture, let’s open our hearts to be shaped and transformed by God’s Word.

Psalm 119:33-40 (NLT): "Teach me your decrees, O Lord; I will keep them to the end. Give me understanding and I will obey your instructions; I will put them into practice with all my heart. Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where my happiness is found. Give me an eagerness for your laws rather than a love for money! Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word. Reassure me of your promise, made to those who fear you. Help me abandon my shameful ways; for your regulations are good. I long to obey your commandments! Renew my life with your goodness."

Point 1: A Desire for Divine Teaching

Psalm 119:33-34 (NLT) - "Teach me your decrees, O Lord; I will keep them to the end. Give me understanding and I will obey your instructions; I will put them into practice with all my heart."

The psalmist starts with a plea for God to teach him His decrees. This is a request for divine instruction and understanding, highlighting the importance of knowing God's laws deeply and personally.

The Hebrew word for "teach" here is "yarah," which means to instruct or direct. The psalmist is asking for more than knowledge; he seeks a deep, personal understanding that leads to obedience. This underscores our need for God’s guidance to truly comprehend and live out His Word.

Proverbs 3:5-6 (NLT) - "Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take."

Imagine a student eager to learn from a master teacher. They don’t just want facts; they want wisdom and insight that can only come from the teacher’s experience and understanding. Similarly, we should seek God’s teaching with eagerness and dedication.

John Piper said, "God’s purpose for us in the Bible is not merely that we might know it, but that we might live it."

Point 2: A Commitment to God’s Path

Psalm 119:35-37 (NLT) - "Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where my happiness is found. Give me an eagerness for your laws rather than a love for money! Turn my eyes from worthless things, and give me life through your word."

Here, the psalmist expresses a commitment to walking in God’s commands and finding true happiness in them. He asks for a heart that delights in God's laws over material wealth and for eyes that focus on what is spiritually valuable.

The Hebrew word for "path" is "orach," which denotes a way or course of life. The psalmist is not merely talking about physical steps but a lifestyle in alignment with God’s will. This verse challenges us to evaluate what we value and where we seek fulfillment.

Matthew 6:33 (NLT) - "Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need."

Consider a hiker on a trail, carefully following the marked path to reach their destination. Deviating from the path could lead to danger or getting lost. Similarly, walking in God’s commands ensures we stay on the right path to spiritual fulfillment and joy.

Francis Chan said, "Our greatest fear should not be of failure but of succeeding at things in life that don’t really matter."

Point 3: A Plea for Renewal and Revival

Psalm 119:38-40 (NLT) - "Reassure me of your promise, made to those who fear you. Help me abandon my shameful ways; for your regulations are good. I long to obey your commandments! Renew my life with your goodness."

The psalmist concludes with a plea for God’s promises to be fulfilled, for help in abandoning sinful ways, and for renewal through God’s goodness. This reflects a heart yearning for spiritual revival and transformation.

The Hebrew word for "renew" is "chayah," which means to live or revive. This signifies a deep spiritual awakening and revitalization that comes from God alone. We, too, must seek God's renewal in our lives, continually turning to Him for strength and revival.

Romans 12:2 (NLT) - "Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world, but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will learn to know God’s will for you, which is good and pleasing and perfect."

Think of a withered plant revived by water and sunlight. Just as the plant needs nourishment to thrive, we need God's goodness to renew and sustain our spiritual lives.
