Thy Kingdom Come
Contributed by Revd. Martin Dale on Nov 1, 2004 (message contributor)
Summary: Thy kingdom come is inextricably tied up with Thy will be done
Your kingdom come, your will be done
Our Father in heaven,
hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come,
your will be done,
on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power,
and the glory are yours
now and for ever.
Amen.
Q: Can you tell me which big country is going to the polls to elect a new leader this week?
A: USA.
Q: What type of country is the USA – a kingdom or a republic
Q Can you tell me any country that is a kingdom then?
A England show map
Q: What does a country need to make it a kingdom?
A: A king
Q: So when Jesus speaks in the Lord’s prayer of “your kingdom come” who is the king of the kingdom?
A. God.
Talk: A kingdom is run by a king and that kingdom is therefore run according to the kings rules and regulations.
So when we ask for God’s kingdom to come it means that we want God’s will to be done.
That’s why Jesus said:
Your kingdom come
Your will be done
Q: Can anyone tell me the name of the book where all God’s laws are written for running our lives?
A: The Bible
Talk: Laws are there to allow us to enjoy ourselves.
Could you have a good game of football if you ignored the rules of football. No - you couldn’t because there would be chaos.
At school you have the golden rules don’t you
Can anyone tell me what they are
God has given us rules in his Bible so we can run our lives the best
Someone once said that if God’s kingdom would come – it would be like having heaven on earth.
Q: Can you think of some of the bad things you would like to get rid of on earth?
A: War, pain, cancer, thieving mistrust, unhappiness, bullying
Q Can you think of some of the good things that you would, like to keep on earth?
Colours, rainbows, pets, Mum and Dad, chips
Talk: We would all rather have the good things on earth rather than the bad things wouldn’t we?
But often that means a change in us too.
Because we do bad things
If we want God’s kingdom to come – it means we need to change the way we live and start acaring for others more.
TRICK
If this bag is the kingdom of God and these three handerchiefs are us. What happens when we go into the kingdom of God
Hand out three handerkerchiefs/Then ask each one to put one back in/Then ask a teacher to take only one out/Three come out attached together.
Talk: You see if we want the kingdom of God happen in our lives – we can’t ignore other people – we become attached to them instead
Your Kingdom come
Your will be done.
Let us pray:
Our Dad in heaven, we want your kingdom to come to this world. We ask that your will will be done in our lives. Help us to care for others around us. We ask this in Jesus’ Name
Amen
