Summary: The seeds of comfort often take root in the soil of pain. When your life seems to be falling apart, wait on the Lord and God will strengthen you.

Isaiah 40:28-31

“They That Wait”

6-29-2025

Isaiah 40:1 “Comfort ye, comfort ye my people,” saith your God. The book of Isaiah makes a dramatic shift at this point. Chapter 40 refers to the restoration after the Exile. Judah still had 100 years of trouble before Jerusalem would fall, then 70 years of exile. So God tells Isaiah to speak tenderly and to comfort Jerusalem. The seeds of comfort often take root in the soil of pain. When your life seems to be falling apart, ask God to comfort you. This prophecy of Isaiah is during a very dark time in the nation of Judah, but out of the darkest of times, God’s Word comes as a message of hope to them through Isaiah. Where do you go when you feel weak, powerless, and defeated? Isaiah sharing with us 3 truths from the Lord to restore hope.

1. HIS PERSON – (EVERLASTING & UNSEARCHABLE) Isaiah 40:28a Do you not know? Have you not heard? Surely you have known and heard what has been proclaimed from priests and prophets regarding the God of Jacob? So Isaiah asks: Have you have both known and heard “that the Everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of the ends of the earth fainteth not neither is weary! There is no searching of His understanding.” We must be reminded of the Person of God - Who He Is. He is Olam Elohim - the Everlasting God. He will always be the Everlasting God, without Beginning or End. But whatever you are going thru has a beginning and an end! He is the Creator of the ends of the earth. He created the limits, the boundaries of the earth and therefore everything in between. So whatever your situation, it is within God’s control! Being Everlasting, always Present and Creator we must be reminded that God is Incapable of Fatigue and Exhaustion - “He fainteth not.” Why? Because He never flees from anybody or anything. Fainting is not part of God’s nature. “Neither is He weary!” God is incapable of Gasping for breath because of exhaustion from labor! He does not get tired of loving, caring, delivering, saving, healing, restoring and preserving. “There is no searching of His understanding.” There is no way to measure His I.Q. Therefore, it is impossible to figure out why He does what he does! For instance, “He gives power to the faint.” He gives supernatural ability to those who are fatigued or faint. “And to them that have no might He increases strength.” We can’t figure out why He increases the ability to accomplish things to those who have no ability to exert themselves in accomplishing one thing!

2. HIS POWER – (BECAUSE OUR FLESH IS WEAK) God is not content to merely hold onto His power within Himself. He takes great delight in empowering His children to do the works of God. Gods said to Paul, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."

** God takes great pleasure in empowering the ordinary to do the extraordinary. TWO UNEXPECTED THINGS: EVEN youths grow weary and tired, and young men stumble…

(1) Youth don’t normally run and get weary; they don’t normally walk and faint! But, in times of crises, confrontation, transition and uncertainty, youths are fainting and are weary. They are tired of the tragic traps of tradition; tired of ritual and routine; tired of meaningless religion; weary of unchallenging faith; weary of just coming and going with no sense of mission and purpose.

(2) Young people are who we send to fight our battles and we send them because the young are stable and sure footed. Our young men are falling to the Gangs; falling to Crime; falling to the Prison System; falling to the Cults; falling to the Love of Money! But the Bible says in Galatians 6:8 Let us not grow weary in well doing, for in due season we will reap if we faint not.

3. HIS PROMISE – (NEW STRENGTH) In the midst of the Unexpected, we must DO THE UNEXPECTED - WE MUST WAIT! Isaiah 40:31 Yet those who wait for the Lord Will gain new strength; They will mount up with wings like eagles, They will run and not get tired, They will walk and not become weary. God is promising us His power at work in our lives, but it comes with a single condition: that we “Wait on the Lord.”

WE MUST CHANGE OUR ATTITUDE ABOUT SORROW AND PAIN AND “WAIT” - “THEY SHALL RENEW THEIR STRENGTH.” The word translated “renew” in this verse also means “Change.” And the word translated ‘Strength” also means “Capacity.” They that wait upon the Lord shall change their capacity. Whereas, things they could not do before, accomplishments which were out of reach before shall be able if they WAIT on the Lord! Waiting on the Lord Changes One’s Attitude! Psalms 27:14 - Wait on the LORD: be of good courage, and he shall strengthen thine heart: wait, I say, on the LORD. And that Change of Attitude results in A TRANSFORMATION OF OUR ALTITUDE! - for they that wait upon the Lord shall mount up with wings as eagles.
