Matt 2:1-12 The Wisdom of the Wise Men

1. The Wisdom (Wonder) of their Search

1 Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judaea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him.

They searched:- The Word of God, (Daniel)

The Works of God, (His Star)

The Way to God, (in Jerusalem)

2. The Wisdom (Wonder) of their Service 2 for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him

No thought of the distance, the danger, the difficulty

Man's Chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him

3. The Wisdom (Wonder) of their Sacrifice

11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh.

(a) Gold - Royalty - I have found my King

(b) Frankincense - Deity - I have found my God

(c) Myrrh - Humanity - I have found my Saviour

F R Havergal - 'Take my silver and my gold' means shipping off all my ornaments to the Church Missionary House, including a jewel cabinet

I don't think I ever packed a box with such pleasure

4. The Wisdom (Wonder) of their Surrender

12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way.

the Wise --seek Him,

the Wiser --find Him

the Wisest --follow Him
