1. THE DELIGHT EXPRESSED - 1 If it had not been the LORD who was on our side, now may Israel say

1. The Person of the Support 1 If it had not been the LORD
2. The Period of the Support 2 when men rose up against us:
The Lord's help was in a critical time. (Psalm 46:1).
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble"
3. The Peril Without the Support - 3 Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us: - "Then. Then. Then"
• The peril of swallowing. 3 Then they had swallowed us up quick.
• of suppressing. 4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us
• of submerging. 4 The stream had gone over our soul... 5 then the proud waters had gone over our soul

C. Words of Exhortation – urged to action
v.1 now may Israel say – declare; publish; boast
2. THE DANGER EXPOSED - 3 Then they had swallowed us up quick, when their wrath was kindled against us:
(a) The Might of the Opposition - 2 when men rose up against us:
(b) The Menace - 3 Then they had swallowed us up quick
(c) The Malice - 3 when their wrath was kindled against us:
By bodily persecution and murder (very common today).
By vain philosophy -evolution, feminism, mysticism,
By enticement (corruption, idolatry, materialism)
3. THE DISTRESS EXPERIENCED - 4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us, the stream had gone over our soul:
(a) Waters of Hellishness - No reasoning with them.
(b) Waters of Helplessness - 4 Then the waters had overwhelmed us
No relief from them. no way of escape; death was inevitable.
(c) Waters of Hopelessness - 4 the stream had gone over our soul:
No rest from them. - life almost gone
4. THE DELIVERANCE EXCLAIMED V. 6 – 8
(a) The Song for Safety -
6 Blessed be the LORD, who hath not given us as a prey to their teeth
(b) The Source of Safety -
8 Our help is in the name of the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
(c) The Succour of Safety - 7 Our soul is escaped as a bird out of the snare of the fowlers: the snare is broken, and we are escaped.
i. The Entirety of Our Help - the snare is broken, and we are escaped.
Hosea 13:14 I will ransom them from the power of the grave; I will redeem them from death: O death, I will be thy plagues; O grave, I will be thy destruction:
1 Cor 15:55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory
ii. The Eternity of Our Help -
