The Two Trees
Theme: To show that there are two trees we chose from: 1) tree of life or 2) tree of the knowledge of good and evil. What is the difference?
Text: Genesis 1 - 3
Genesis 2:4-9 This is the history [3] of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the Lord God made the earth and the heavens, (5) before any plant of the field was in the earth and before any herb of the field had grown. For the Lord God had not caused it to rain on the earth, and there was no man to till the ground; (6) but a mist went up from the earth and watered the whole face of the ground. (7) And the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living being. (8) The Lord God planted a garden eastward in Eden, and there He put the man whom He had formed. (9) And out of the ground the Lord God made every tree grow that is pleasant to the sight and good for food. The tree of life was also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
Introduction
What we learn about God in the first two chapters:
God – Elohim
- "a transcendent being who exercises extraordinary control in human affairs or is responsible for bestowal of unusual benefits", mighty and powerful
DEEPER STUDY #2
(1:1) God (Elohim): Elohim is the general or universal name for God in the Hebrew language. It means the Almighty God, the God of all might and strength. It means the Strong and Mighty, the Omnipotent, the One with supreme power and intelligence, the One who is always there, the Faithful One, the One who is to be reverenced and feared (see note—•Genesis 1:3). God's (Elohim's) power in creation is to strike reverence and fear in the heart of man. The word is used about 2570 times in the Bible. The word "Elohim" is a plural noun which suggests the Trinity. (See note 4, pt.1d—•Genesis 1:2 for a discussion on all three persons being involved in creation. Also see note 2—•Genesis 2:4; note 1—•Genesis 2:7 for a discussion of Jehovah or Yahweh as a name for God. Cp. Genesis 14:18; Genesis 15:2; Genesis 17:1; Genesis 21:33; Genesis 22:14; Exodus 3:14-15; Exodus 4:10-11; 1 Samuel 1:3.)
Thought 1. The very name of God, Elohim, says three things to us.
1) God (Elohim) is the One with the power to create the universe.
2) God (Elohim) is the One upon whom we can depend to deliver us. He is always there, always faithful, and He has the power and strength to always help us.
3) God (Elohim) is the Omnipotent One, the Sovereign Majesty of the universe; therefore, we are to worship and serve Him in all reverence and fear.
Preacher's Outline and Sermon Bible - Commentary - Preacher's Outline & Sermon Bible, The – Genesis I.
God created the universe. This where it all begins. Some apologize because these two chapters do not match up to their natural mind, but I begin with the opening statement. This all-powerful mighty God who has control over the universe and human affairs created in 6 days.
When He was done, He saw everything and “it was good”.
God created man as the crowning achievement of His creation
Gen 1:27-31 So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. (28) Then God blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and subdue it; have dominion over the fish of the sea, over the birds of the air, and over every living thing that moves on the earth." (29) And God said, "See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food. (30) Also, to every beast of the earth, to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth, in which there is life, I have given every green herb for food"; and it was so. (31) Then God saw everything that He had made, and indeed it was very good. So the evening and the morning were the sixth day.
God created male and female and challenged them to multiply and rule the earth. In these first two chapters we learn God’s view of marriage that is between a male and female. Two people joined, separating themselves from family and being one.
As we learn a fallen and sinful world may mess things up but God created male and female in His sight. He created us in His image. He distinguished between the two and always have.
