The Truth vs. A Lie

Scripture: 1 John 1:1-10

Introduction: God is all knowing (Omniscience); God is present everywhere (Omnipresence); and He is all-powerful (omnipotent). Christ, the Son of God came in the flesh, He was 100% man, but He was also 100% God. Jesus Christ has always existed and always has been.

Read Scripture: 1 John 1:1-10 (All Stand Please for the reading of God’s Word)

Let’s Pray, then be seated.

I. In the beginning (verse 1)

A. John 1: 1-5 - 1In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2The same was in the beginning with God. 3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4In him was life; and the life was the light of men. 5And the light shineth in darkness; and the darkness comprehended it not.

B. When time began He already was, and therefore He was from eternity.

II. Witness to Christ (verse 1-3)

A. He came to earth in the flesh:

a. He had a body that could be touched

b. He had a body that could be seen

B. God, the very giver of life, came in the flesh as man to pay the penalty for our sins.

C. He freely showed his resurrected body after the crucifixion:

a. To Mary Magdalene

b. To His disciples (not Thomas)

c. To Thomas with the disciples

d. The disciples at the Sea of Tiberias

e. He was seen of above five hundred at once

D. I Timothy 3:16 - 16And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.

E. If Jesus is not God, when did God come in the Flesh?

III. Light Brings Joy & Fellowship - The Truth (verse 3-5; 7)

A. Jesus is Light, He is sinless, without fault, blameless (He paid the price on the cross for our sins)

B. It was necessary for innocent (sinless) blood to be spilled.

C. The account of Jesus’ resurrection is given as testimony that we might believe.

D. It is by repenting and turning to Jesus as the only source of hope; that true fellowship with God and other Christians begins.

E. The Blood has to be applied

IV. Darkness is Maintained by Deception – The Lie (verse 6; 8; 10)

A. There are those that appear to have fellowship (verse 6)

B. Romans 3:23 - 23For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

C. We can and do deceive ourselves – leaving ourselves without the truth.

D. By rejecting our need for Christ, we make Him a liar and we remain in darkness

V. The Way to the Light – The Truth (verse 9)

A. The only way out of the darkness is Jesus Christ:

a. John 14:6 - 6Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.

B. What must one do to leave the darkness and go into the light:

a. Believe: John 3:16 - 16For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.

b. Repent: Matthew 4:17 - 7From that time Jesus began to preach, and to say, Repent: for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

c. Confess: 1 John 1:9 – 9If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

C. We are condemned already without Him– We are living a lie without Christ

a. John 3:18 - 18He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Conclusion: The question this morning is; do you love darkness more than light. Are you willing to let your life be examined by the Light? We all come short of God’s glory, Christ paid the price. Are you willing to Believe; Repent; and Confess this morning so that Christ can live in you. A failure to decide is in fact a decision.
