Summary: Using the story of the Three Little Pigs to examine some common mistakes that Christians make.

The story of the 3 Little Pigs is a well known story: – The 1st little pig built his house out of straw with no structure and when the wolf came he was able to blow the house down. The 2nd little pig built his house out of sticks with no structure and when the wolf came he was able to blow the house down. The 3rd little pig built his house out of bricks and mortar with structure and when the wolf came he was unable to blow the house down and the little pig and the other two pigs was safe and was not eaten.

The five problems that plague many people with building their faith and lives

1. They had problems with their foundations.

The strength of the house is dependant on its foundations. We are God’s structure.

1 Corinthians 3:10 – According to the grace of God which was given to me like a wise master builder I laid a foundation and another is building on it. For no man can lay a foundation other then that which is laid.

The foundation you have to have in your life is Jesus Christ. We need to get the fundamental doctrines of the Bible into our hearts and minds. This unfortunately doesn’t happen quickly and requires time and effort into put into it.

Matthew 7: 24 – Then everyone who hears these words of mine and acts on them may be compared to a wise man who builds his house on a rock. And the rain fell and the waves came and the winds blew and slammed against that house, yet it did not fall because it had been founded on the rock. Everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. The rains fell, the waves came and the winds blew and slammed against that house and great was its fall.

If you are going to be a great temple for the kingdom of God you need to have Jesus as the lord of your life.

2. They were using the wrong materials.

The quality of the materials will determine the strength of our structure.

Examples: Being in a life group, church attendance, daily quiet time, prayer.

A building built with good materials will be able to withstand the storms of life

Matthew 7:13-14 -Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. “For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.

Make quality choices and use quality materials to build our lives.

3. The effort that they were willing to put in

We live in a modernised world where everything happens quickly. So when It comes to God we don’t want to put in effort. But God doesn’t work that way.

John 16:33 – In the world you are going to have trials and tribulations but be of good cheer because I have overcome the world and I have deprived it of its power to overcome you.

4. The problem with the wolf

Acts 20:29 – “I know that after my departure savage wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock;

This is like the devil coming against the church. The wolf took out the pigs. This is what the devil does to people in the church.

We need to understand that there is a devil who is 100% committed to taking us out. When he comes against us we need to stand strong.

Ephesians 6:10 – 11 – Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. Put on the full armour of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.

5. The location of their faith

Where was the faith of the pigs? The pigs believed in their chin hairs: (Not by the hair of my Chinny Chinny Chin). When the devil comes against you what do you put your faith in? Is it material things or in the power of God?

Don’t pull out of the race when something goes wrong. Have faith in God and stay strong. We have to have faith in the word of God, in Jesus Christ, in the fact that God is on our side.
