THE SICKENING SITUATION OF SIN
Psalm 51
My Bible says at the beginning of Psalm 51 - "A Psalm of David, when Nathan the prophet came unto him, after he had gone in to Bathsheba.
You remember the story of Nathan – Explain (2 Sam. 12)
A. Can a saved person sin? David did.
1. The sin of omission (He should have been at battle)
2. The sin of adultery
3. The sin of murder
4. The sin of lying
5. The sin of a bad reproach
B. Certainly the truth of this song would be well illustrated in David’s life.
"Sin will take you farther than you want to go.
Sin will keep you longer than your want to stay
Sin will cost you much more than you want to pay."
Can a Christian Sin? Can a Christian sin and get away with it?
I want us to see the fearful cost of sin in the life of the believer - - but more than that - - we want to see what to do when we have sin in our life.
T/S This wonderful pray of David reveals 7 great truths about sin in the life of the believe.
I. SIN SOILS THE SOUL.
2 Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin.
He felt dirty, grimy, filthy. The hog loves the mud but the sheep are miserable there.
A Christian lap into sin and loathes it.
A lost person leaps in to sin and loves it.
II. SIN SATURATES THE MIND.
3 For I acknowledge my transgressions: and my sin is ever before me.
If you are saved and sin, God will not let you forget it.
There are 2 kinds of spiritual wounds: 1. Sorrow - it will heal
2. Guilt - It will not heal unless it is forgiven. We need forgiveness from God - from self – and from others.
III. SIN STINGS THE CONSCIENCE.
4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight: that thou mightest be justified when thou speakest, and be clear when thou judgest.
A. I feel like asking David - What do you mean saying to God, "Against thee and thee only have I sinned"?
Did he not sin against Bathsheba?
Did he not sin against Uriah?
Did he not sin against the unborn child?
Did he not sin against himself?
Did he not sin against his nation?
He has sinned against all the nations around him.
B. David realized that his sin was a slap in the face of his God first and foremost.
David realized that he had not only broken God’s law but he had broken God’s heart.
IV. SIN SICKENS THE BODY.
8 Make me to hear joy and gladness; that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.
A. I don’t believe that he is talking about physical broken bones. We use similar language today when we say, "I was just crushed by it".
B. I am not a Christian Scientist but doctors have proven that much of man’s physical sickness today is a result of guilt.
C. Sin will make you sick. In a direct way - all sickness is as a result of sin. I am not saying that every time you get sick it is because of some sin in your life but many times it is.
V. SIN WILL SOUR YOUR SPIRIT.
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
It is not your problem that is your problem
It is you attitude about your problem that is the problem.
VI. SIN SADDENS THE HEART
12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
When God saved you, He did not fix it to where you cannot sin anymore - - He just fixed it so you cannot enjoy sin anymore.
The most miserable person on earth is not the lost person - - It is the saved person who is out of fellowship with God.
VII. SIN WILL SEAL YOUR LIPS
12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; and sinners shall be converted unto thee.
15 O Lord, open thou my lips; and my mouth shall show forth thy praise.
CONCLUSION:
God’s mercy will soothe our soul.
1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.
A. you had better seek God mercy & loving-kindness.
