THE SEVEN MIRACLES IN JOHN

INTRODUCTION

The Gospel of John records seven key miracles, often referred to as “signs,” that reveal the divine nature of Jesus Christ. These miracles were not performed merely to impress but to point people to the truth that Jesus is the Son of God.

Each miracle addresses a specific human need: provision, healing, deliverance, and even victory over death. They serve as evidence of Christ’s authority over nature, sickness, and the spiritual realm.

These miracles are recorded to strengthen faith. As believers study them, they gain a deeper understanding of Christ’s power and are encouraged to trust Him for every situation in life.

1. WATER TURNED INTO WINE (JOHN 2:1-11)

This miracle demonstrates Christ’s power over natural elements and His ability to transform situations.

a. Divine Transformation (John 2:9)

Jesus turned water into wine, showing His creative power.

b. Meeting Human Needs (John 2:3)

He responded to a practical need at the wedding.

c. Manifestation of Glory (John 2:11)

This miracle revealed His glory to the disciples.

d. The Role of Obedience (John 2:5)

The servants obeyed and saw the miracle.

e. Biblical Example:

God provided manna in the wilderness, demonstrating His ability to supply needs (Exodus 16:14-15).

2. HEALING OF THE NOBLEMAN’S SON (JOHN 4:46-54)

Jesus demonstrated that His word carries power, even from a distance.

a. Power of the Word (John 4:50)

Jesus spoke, and the child was healed.

b. Faith Without Seeing (John 4:48)

The nobleman believed before seeing results.

c. Authority Over Distance (Psalm 107:20)

God sends His word to heal.

d. Strengthened Faith (John 4:53)

The miracle led to household salvation.

e. Biblical Example:

Naaman was healed when he obeyed God’s instruction, even though it seemed simple (2 Kings 5:10-14).

3. HEALING AT THE POOL OF BETHESDA (JOHN 5:1-9)

This miracle shows Christ’s power to restore hopeless situations.

a. Compassion of Christ (John 5:6)

Jesus noticed the man’s long suffering.

b. Instant Healing (John 5:8)

The man was healed immediately.

c. Breaking Limitations (John 5:7)

Jesus bypassed natural limitations.

d. New Beginning (John 5:9)

The man received a fresh start.

e. Biblical Example:

The woman with the issue of blood received instant healing by faith (Mark 5:25-34).

4. FEEDING OF THE FIVE THOUSAND (JOHN 6:5-13)

Jesus demonstrated His power of multiplication and provision.

a. Supernatural Provision (John 6:11)

Jesus multiplied the loaves and fishes.

b. Using What Is Available (John 6:9)

God uses little to produce much.

c. Overflowing Abundance (John 6:13)

There were leftovers after everyone ate.

d. Dependence on Christ (John 6:35)

Jesus is the Bread of Life.

e. Biblical Example:

Elisha multiplied a widow’s oil, demonstrating God’s provision (2 Kings 4:1-7).

5. JESUS WALKING ON WATER (JOHN 6:16-21)

This miracle shows Christ’s authority over nature and circumstances.

a. Power Over Nature (John 6:19)

Jesus walked on the sea.

b. Presence in the Storm (John 6:20)

He brought calm to fearful disciples.

c. Divine Assurance (John 6:20)

“Be not afraid” reveals His comforting presence.

d. Supernatural Intervention (John 6:21)

The boat reached its destination immediately.

e. Biblical Example:

God parted the Red Sea, demonstrating control over nature (Exodus 14:21-22).

6. HEALING OF THE MAN BORN BLIND (JOHN 9:1-7)

Jesus revealed His power to bring light and restoration.

a. Works of God Manifested (John 9:3)

The miracle displayed God’s glory.

b. Restoration of Sight (John 9:7)

The man received his sight.

c. Obedience Brings Results (John 9:7)

He obeyed and was healed.

d. Spiritual Insight (John 9:39)

The miracle pointed to spiritual enlightenment.

e. Biblical Example:

Elisha prayed, and the servant’s eyes were opened to see the spiritual realm (2 Kings 6:17).

7. RAISING OF LAZARUS (JOHN 11:1-44)

This miracle demonstrates Christ’s authority over death.

a. Power Over Death (John 11:43)

Jesus called Lazarus back to life.

b. Delayed but Not Denied (John 11:6)

God’s timing is purposeful.

c. Strengthening Faith (John 11:15)

The miracle was meant to build faith.

d. Glory of God Revealed (John 11:40)

The miracle revealed God’s glory.

e. Biblical Example:

Elijah raised the widow’s son, showing God’s power over death (1 Kings 17:21-22).

CONCLUSION

The seven miracles in the Gospel of John reveal the power, compassion, and divine authority of Jesus Christ. Each miracle is a sign pointing to His identity as the Son of God and the Saviour of the world.

As believers reflect on these miracles, their faith is strengthened. Jesus is still working miracles today, and those who believe in Him will experience His power in every area of life.
