Summary: Jesus speaks concerning making oaths, retaliations and dealing with our enemies.

The Saying of Jesus Part 7

Matt. 5:33-48

Jesus in this public address is expounding of the law and challenging the listener to consider the whole law with its spiritual implications.

The subject of marriage and divorce has become complicated today not because of God’s position on marriage, but because of the hearts of mankind. The biggest problem in marriages today is fornication!

Point: Whenever there is a divorce in marriage it always leaves scars that will need to be repaired.

1. Swearing

See: Vs.33-37 Jesus teaching on swearing

“Ye have heard that it hath been said”

Swear: to vow or make an oath

See: Numbers 30:2, See: Deut. 23:21-23

See: Eccl. 5:4-5

Psalms 50:14 pay thy vows

Mention: Vs.34-36 Jesus says do not swear at all by heaven or any other thing

Question: what about it a court of law?

See: Lev. 19:12 And ye shall not swear by my name falsely…

Point: Vs.37 A yes always ought to mean yes and a no should mean no

The words of a person should depend on his or her character and not an oath!

Statement: the more words a person has to use to convince someone of a truth should cause one to maybe become suspicious.

Proverbs 10:19 In the multitude of words wanteth not sin: but he that refraineth his lips is wise.

2. Retaliation

See: Vs.38

See: Exodus 21:24-27

See: Lev. 24:19-20

Vs.39-40 But I say unto you…

Explanation: What Jesus is saying here is do not render evil for evil. A greater understanding is this “Do not take the law in your own hands”

Vs.41 Go the extra mile to maintain peace

Mention: Romans 12:17-19 Let the Lord settle the case for you

Point: what the Lord is not saying is not to protect yourself if being physically harmed

Vs.42 Give to him that asketh thee…

See: Deut. 15:7-10

And: 1 Tim. 6:18

3. Enemies

See: Vs.43 It hath been said love your neighbor and hate thine enemy

See: Lev. 19:17-18

Vs.44-47 Jesus is saying wish your enemies well, do them good and pray for them

Vs.45 This is what God does to all

See: Luke 6:35 He is kind unto the unthankful and to the evil

Vs.46-47

Point: There ought to something different about us than the rest of the world

Vs.48 Be ye therefore perfect even as your Father…

Three Things:

• Love is a mark of maturity

• It is Godlike

• It is a testimony to others
